Matsumoto's nightlife is more subdued than larger Japanese cities, but you'll still find several pleasant options, primarily centred around the city centre.The area around Matsumoto Station and stretching towards Matsumoto Castle is where you'll find most of the evening entertainment. This includes a concentration of izakayas (Japanese pubs that serve food and drinks), small bars, and a few karaoke establishments. You'll find many of these tucked away on side streets and in multi-story buildings.As another option, head to Nakamachi Street and its surrounding lanes. While primarily a daytime shopping area, some of the traditional kura (storehouses) have been converted into small, intimate bars and sake tasting rooms. It's a quieter option, superb for enjoying local sake or a craft beer in a setting with historical character.Additionally, in the vicinity of the castle, there are a few establishments that offer live music, usually jazz or acoustic acts, often in a more relaxed lounge setting.
