"We had a wonderful stay at Ryokan Sansui. The hospitality was truly exceptional—warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming throughout our visit. We especially loved the traditional atmosphere of the ryokan, which made the experience feel very authentic and relaxing.
The onsen was a highlight of our stay—peaceful, clean, and a perfect way to unwind after a day of travel. Everything felt thoughtfully maintained, and the overall ambiance was calm and serene.
This was a memorable experience, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy a traditional Japanese stay. Thank you to the team for making our visit so special—we would love to return again"
"Friendly staff, beautiful room, beautiful onsen, and dinner and breakfast was excellent. We stayed with two teenage daughter and jus had an amazing 2 day stay. Also great walks on the area"
"Wonderful first time stay in an authentic ryokan. Exceeded expectations. Decor is lovely. Food is delicious and served by attentive staff. Had a room with private inside and outside baths. Had never heard of a kotatso and it was so relaxing I didn't want to leave. Highly recommend."
"Richmond Hotel Matsumoto was a wonderful surprise.
As a budget-friendly business hotel, we weren’t expecting much—but it turned out to be far nicer than anticipated. The room was spotlessly clean, with a comfortable queen bed and a divan-style sofa that made for a perfect little reading nook.
The breakfast buffet was simple but satisfying, with enough variety to suit even a finicky Western palate.
Its location is excellent—convenient to the train station, restaurants, and shopping—making it an easy base for exploring. Matsumoto itself is a lovely city that feels a bit under the radar for international travellers, yet it offers so much charm. It’s also an ideal staging point for trips into the Japanese Alps or the Kiso Valley.
All in all, a great option if you’re looking for something budget-friendly without feeling bare bones."
"Staff was very helpful and courteous. The service rendered was excellent. The Hida beef for dinner and breakfast was also very good. We enjoyed our stay."
"Okuhida Hot Spring Hirayukan is conveniently located, just a short and easy walk from the Hirayu Onsen bus terminal. A small shop beside the ryokan sells snacks and drinks, which is useful especially in the quieter evenings.
Check in was smooth and the ryokan already had our Expedia reservations. As with most Japanese ryokan, copies of our passports were taken. We stayed in the Japanese Style Room, Sengakuso, Non Smoking (35 sqm). Footwear must be removed at the main lobby and changed to the in house slippers, in line with traditional ryokan customs.
Our room was located some distance away from the main lobby and required climbing two flights of stairs, with no lift access. There were no shower facilities in the room, which is typical for many traditional ryokan. The onsen baths are located in the main building, and the male and female bathing areas are rotated once a day.
Buffet dinner offered at Y4400 per person from 6pm. It was enjoyable and good value, with a wide selection including seafood. Each table is provided with two fuel stoves, and guests can choose between grilling, hotplate, or hotpot to cook the raw food.
A nice touch is the free ramen served at the main lobby from 10pm to 10.30pm, perfect for a light supper after a soak in the onsen."
"Luxury property with beautiful rooms, stunning views, amazing food and friendly staff. What a great place to stay to relax and enjoy the area. Highly recommend! "
