Ecclefechan is a small village, yet its most enduring claim to fame is being the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle, the poet and author, born in 1795. The cottage that he lived in as a child now houses a recreation of an 1800s cottage and is run as a museum by the National Trust for Scotland, which lends a feel to the village that it has been left behind by history. Ecclefechan is perhaps more famous for the Ecclefechan Tart – a taste not to be missed! Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant 20 yards.

Over all very nice house.
Over all very nice house.well equipped for ground floor living.if I need to nicpic.there wasn't any hooks especially in the ground floor bathroom.we had to put everything on the floor.the white goods in the kitchen were very dated but they did work.Having the hotel just a few yards away was a plus if you fancy a drink.

We all, three adults and a dog, enjoyed our holiday.
We all, three adults and a dog, enjoyed our holiday. The cottage was spacious and we'll furnished. The beds were especially comfortable. Lovely to have a porch to leave muddy boots and wet coats although the weather was pretty good for October. The downstairs shower wasn't very powerful but the one upstairs was really good. Lots of equipment in the kitchen but one or two additional items would be useful such as a salad bowl, potato peeler etc.
Lots of interesting places to visit in the area. We enjoyed Caerlaverock Castle and the Solway coast as well as Dumfries and the Burns and Carlyle museums. Big supermarket in Lockerbie for groceries but the Cressfield Hotel just next door serves delicious meals if you don't want to cook.

Lovely cottage, plenty room and has everything you need.
Lovely cottage, plenty room and has everything you need. Garden enclosed by hedge so need to watch if dog s are out as could get through some bits. Dog friendly walk round woods from cottage-about 4 miles round it. Hotel just across car park, Great food and friendly staff. Nice walk into village and not far from bigger towns to visit.
