A charming small hotel in a perfect location
The helpful English-speaking reception staff always gave a warm welcome. The hotel is housed in a small nineteenth century Ottoman villa, which has been carefully restored to retain its original ambiance. There is a lovely shaded garden ideal for relaxing over a drink after a long day's sightseeing. Although in the middle of the main tourist sights the hotel manages to be very quite, and has a feeling of modest exclusivity. Unlike most of the hotels in this district it is at the top of the hill, so there are no steep climbs when coming and going, and it's easy to pop back for a forgotten guide book. As an occasional visitor to Istanbul, I have to say this is now my favourite hotel.
Cons: There was no lift, but that is a small price to pay for authenticity. Putting in a lift would have a very negative impact on this historic building.
Location: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Hagia Eirene, Topkapi Palace, Hippodrome, Basilica Cistern, Turkish and Islamic Art Museum (closed 2014 for restoration).
