A charming small hotel in a perfect location

The helpful English-speaking reception staff always gave a warm welcome. The hotel is housed in a small nineteenth century Ottoman villa, which has been carefully restored to retain its original ambiance. There is a lovely shaded garden ideal for relaxing over a drink after a long day's sightseeing. Although in the middle of the main tourist sights the hotel manages to be very quite, and has a feeling of modest exclusivity. Unlike most of the hotels in this district it is at the top of the hill, so there are no steep climbs when coming and going, and it's easy to pop back for a forgotten guide book. As an occasional visitor to Istanbul, I have to say this is now my favourite hotel.

Pros: Everything.

Cons: There was no lift, but that is a small price to pay for authenticity. Putting in a lift would have a very negative impact on this historic building.

Location: Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Hagia Eirene, Topkapi Palace, Hippodrome, Basilica Cistern, Turkish and Islamic Art Museum (closed 2014 for restoration).

4/5 Good

Ottoman House Hotel

Small but comfortable room on the top floor with a view of Aya Sophia. Got used to the early morning call to prayers but may annoy some. Great location and easy to take tram to other parts of town. Good buffet breakfast. Front desk were responsive but could have been more helpful in pointing out the machines very close to the hotel where you could buy the 72 hour museum pass without queing up or the post office kiosk which is also nearby. Bitter after taste left when upon receiving the bill I was told that service had not been included although I had left tips for all meals, porter and chambermaid.

Pros: Location, old world charm, beautiful garden where you can have drinks, lunch etc. Great to escape to the garden after being hassled as a tourist.

Cons: No elevator so you need to be fit to stay on the top floors. Right next to a mosque so the early morning call to prayer may wake you.

Location: View of the Aya Sophia from some bedrooms, Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace are all within steps of the hotel. 15 minute walk to the Grand Bazaar.
