About this property
Historical Dogtrot Chestnut Log Cabin.
Maple Spring Farm is located in the gorgeous foothills of Amherst County, VA very near Nelson County and Piney River. Secluded, quiet, private and pup friendly! Very close to Piney River, Wintergreen Ski Resort, Tye River, James River, wineries, breweries, distilleries, hiking, and fishing, in a lovely private setting. Ideal setting for artists, families, couples, and small events. This Dogtrot Cabin was built in the 1860's and restored to its original glory and then some. Updated for modern day living, this log home features two queen bedrooms upstairs, and a large full bath on the main floor, as well as two fireplaces(one working) and a full kitchen with seating for four. The living room is very cozy with fireplace and rockers. Granny's feather stuffed sofa will make you feel like you have gone back in time. There are sitting areas and period furniture throughout the cabin for quiet reading and conversation nooks or just relaxing. Out back there is a beautiful stone patio with a grill, picnic table and furniture. In the front is a shady porch for viewing the sunset or enjoying morning coffee or an afternoon beverage in the shade. We welcome up to four guests per night. Dogtrot log houses are rare; This home was built by an African American man from New York after the Civil War. Originally it had two chimneys, one of which collapsed years ago and now there sits an addition in its place with a full bathroom. The other chimney is fully restored and lined for use today. The landscaping is in keeping with traditional plantings of the era with a few extras. We even have a few artifacts to show from the excavation of the patio and old fireplace foundation. There are plenty of trails to explore on our farm on foot or mountain bike. The main house is 400 feet up the hill where we welcome visitors and enjoy meeting our guests! You can pick up the keys there.
There is a campsite which can accommodate up to 10 people in 2 tents or 2 RV's. Power, water and a porta-potty included for extra fee if available. Contact owner for more information. Our family includes four friendly dogs and three cats that might come down for a visit if you're outside and love to go on walks around the property. This property is quite unique and cozy, and we are sure it will satisfy your outdoor getaway needs! At the end of the road, traffic is well, there is none other than us. There are plenty of activities available in the area. Ski slopes and tubing slopes 25 minutes away at Wintergreen. The George Washington National Forest has several access points nearby. The Lockn’ Festival is 15 minutes away. The surrounding beauty of the area is an excellent location for plein-air artists. There are several breweries, wineries, a couple distilleries, food establishments within 15-30 minute drive. There are swimming and fishing lakes in the county that are free for public use. Three golf courses in the area including Poplar Grove in Amherst and Wintergreen just up 151 north in Nelson County. Trout fishing and hunting are close by in the National Forest lands. Piney River Rail Trail is 4 miles away and is 14 mile roundtrip. Bicycles, horses, dogs and humans welcome.. There are three small convenience stores and a dollar General with in 5 miles. Food Lion Grocery in Amherst or Lovingston which are 15 miles either direction. If you need any concierge services or a driver please contact Suzy.

Wonderfull location for us to go to our Granddaughters wedding, Remote and peaceful. Really enjoyed it , owner very responsive to any questions etc.Maybe not as good for OLD People, stairs , bedrooms upstairs but bueatifully decorated.
The cabin was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We didn’t have much time to explore the area, but we will be back! The host was very hospitable and communicated well. Very neat historic cabin. The host’s dogs were super friendly and sweet too!
We had a great time staying at the Dogtrot cabin! The cabin was comfortable and the setting was soo relaxing. Suzy was a wonderful host and her love of the place shines through. We hope to return again.
Pictures of Dog Trot do not do this gem justice. It truly is an experience staying in this historical cabin. So relaxing. We made a camp fire our last big there. Watched deer and turkeys from the front porch and patio. Gorgeous property. Suzy is a wonderful and accommodating host. We rented this again for a few days in October to take advantage of the fall foliage. Can't wait.
I don't know where to start. Generous, kind, helpful. I made new friends in Susie and Traft and am very happy to have met them. I feel humbled in the cabin. It's truly amazing to think of the man who built it with his own hands. The cabin is clean and very comfortable. The views and countryside, breathtaking. You'll see a gazillion stars on a clear night. Stay a while and enjoy cooking in a full kitchen. We saw deer every day. Birds galore and the owls at night, wow! I didn't want to leave. Susie and Traft, peace and good health!
We stayed four nights. The log home is even nicer than the pictures. Very comfortable and clean. Suzy the host was so hospitable, she had coffee stuff and and snacks available in the home for guests. Very peaceful setting, so easy to relax in. The front porch and rear patio were awesome to have our coffee on. We would definetely go back. We love history and antiques so this was a perfect place for us to stay.
We had a great time staying at this authentic and modernized mountain cabin. The kids loved the quiet surroundings with excellent restaurants within a 15 minute drive. Farm dogs were wonderful! They would great my children each morning. Suzy was great. She responded to my every message. An incredible and relaxing stay.
It's a beautiful cabin, the "welcoming committee" of dogs is adorable. The mattresses on the beds were sagging a bit, but it was overall a great place to stay.
The cabin is absolutely amazing! From the historical information and local recommendations left in the book for the property, to the patio where you can sit and have a cup of coffee with the welcoming committee, to the variety of board games to play with your family. Every room is extremely spacious with fantastic temperature control. Suzy was also fantastic to talk to about the property’s rich history! We can’t wait to visit again.

Absolutely beautiful and unique property! Host was wonderful!
My husband and I had a wonderful getaway with our two dogs. Suze and Toney were welcoming hosts, and you can tell a lot of love and care was taken in restoring this charming cottage.
From the moment we were welcomed to this cozy cabin with plenty of firewood for the indoor and outdoor fires, we enjoyed exploring around outdoors as well as the nooks and crannies
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Cabin was clean and had all the basic necessities. Could use a microwave and a full size refrigerator, but otherwise well-appointed. The cabin and its history were very interesting. Host was helpful and easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay again.
This is our third time visiting, and we always love the time to disconnect a bit and just be with our family. The cabin is just great with it's historic presence combined with some modernizations. We enjoy hiking around the property with our dog and with Suzy's dogs leading the way for us
We love coming here.
