Absolutely loved this hotel.
Everything about this hotel was perfect for the occasion. We had ready access to public transportation, a great, safe neighborhood to wander, close to many of the most interesting sites in Philadelphia. Any necessary amenity was close at hand. The room was lovely, clean and quiet. The staff was friendly and helpful. We also got a terrific rate for a two-night stay on Expedia. If I had one quibble, it was the TV reception, but since I wasn't visiting Philly to watch television, it didn't seem worth mentioning at the time.
Neighbourhood recommendations: The old city neighborhood, where the Latham is located, is simply beautiful. Shopping, restaurants, the magnificent Rittenhouse Square, historic buildings, museums, theatres, concert halls and other sites of interest are all close enough to the Latham that I can imagine spending far more than a weekend there without ever having to travel to find something fascinating to do.
Getting around: Philadelphia seems to be a very walkable city, and the public transportation was reasonably priced, well-marked and more convenient than I could have imagined.
Great location and value in Center City
What a great evening in Philadelphia. The Latham is perfectly located for shopping and fine dining. It's also close to cultural attractions. I highly recommend it as a high value hotel.
A good value in need of some updating
The Latham is showing signs of age, at least in the room we were in, which was on the side of the building opposite Walnut Street. I understand many of the rooms have been remodeled. Housekeeping was attentive, especially when we alerted the maid to torn fabric in a chair at the desk and a faulty TV. They were replaced quickly. We would stay there again, although we would ask for one of the remodeled rooms. The location is excellent, a block from Rittenhouse Square and an easy walk to the Academy of Music. It was also reasonably priced for that part of town.
Neighbourhood recommendations: We like the area near Rittenhouse Square as it is within walking distance to the theaters on Broad Street, with good shopping and restaurants nearby.
General Information
What to expect: Bay windows accent the exterior of this handsome 14-story Philadelphia hotel, built in 1907. The lobby is an intimate, elegant space with wood-paneled walls, chandeliers, Oriental rugs on stone floors, and floral arrangements. Guests are largely individual businesspeople drawn by the high level of service and plentiful extras. The boutique style and choice location attract leisure travelers, too.
Amenity highlights: Service is a hallmark of this establishment, with a concierge, 24-hour reception, same-day dry cleaning and laundry service, and valet parking. Complimentary wireless Internet access is available throughout the hotel.
Insider tip: Gourmets will want to stroll the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Walnut Street just east of the hotel. A number of Philadelphia's finest restaurants line these two blocks, including Alma de Cuba, Brasserie Perrier, Susanna Foo, Striped Bass, and, best of all, Le Bec-Fin. Just off Walnut on 15th is ¡Pasión!, a well-regarded Pan-Latin spot.
