The poolside setting of glorious ocean views amid palms and figs and the open but intimate layout of Garden Island coupled with the warmth of the welcome that we received and the high quality food gave us the impression of staying in an exclusive bed and breakfast or upmarket boutique you'd ordinarily pay through the nose for.
We avoided the "resorts" of DI by making the extra but fun trip to Garden Island and we were rewarded with a peaceful, unique stay.
The facilities were simple but it's strengths were an outstanding, fresh menu that changed daily and a pool area which was lined by an open and most comfortable restaurant and bar overlooking the ocean and licked with sun and delightful afternoon tranquility.
The rooms were comfortable without being outstanding as they were somewhat small though were immaculately clean and the ocean front hot tub in each room was a big win.
Most appealing re rooms though was that they were positioned within metres of the water so we woke to ocean views in the morning, views of the sunset in the afternoon, and we'd retire to bed with the soft sound of waves in the evening.
Taveuni is large enough to get out and enjoy a day trip to lush rain forests and waterfalls or escape to an isolated island with a packed lunch prepared by the hotel.
The resorts diving facilities are first class and the snorkelling is wonderful.
Make the effort if you are after a peaceful, romantic escape.
We loved our stay at Garden Island.

My husband and I stayed at Bedarra Beach Inn for a week in September. A relaxing place to stay with staff that are very attentive and friendly whilst also respecting your space. We stayed in a Superior room; spacious, comfortable and clean, with a deck that had lovely lagoon and garden views. The restaurant and bar are reasonably priced in comparison to other places in the area, the food is great, and the setting looking across the lagoon is magic. Pool area is relatively small but was never crowded, sufficient for the size of the hotel. Also a treat to have the deck chairs by the beach as another place to chill out.
