The poolside setting of glorious ocean views amid palms and figs and the open but intimate layout of Garden Island coupled with the warmth of the welcome that we received and the high quality food gave us the impression of staying in an exclusive bed and breakfast or upmarket boutique you'd ordinarily pay through the nose for.
We avoided the "resorts" of DI by making the extra but fun trip to Garden Island and we were rewarded with a peaceful, unique stay.
The facilities were simple but it's strengths were an outstanding, fresh menu that changed daily and a pool area which was lined by an open and most comfortable restaurant and bar overlooking the ocean and licked with sun and delightful afternoon tranquility.
The rooms were comfortable without being outstanding as they were somewhat small though were immaculately clean and the ocean front hot tub in each room was a big win.
Most appealing re rooms though was that they were positioned within metres of the water so we woke to ocean views in the morning, views of the sunset in the afternoon, and we'd retire to bed with the soft sound of waves in the evening.
Taveuni is large enough to get out and enjoy a day trip to lush rain forests and waterfalls or escape to an isolated island with a packed lunch prepared by the hotel.
The resorts diving facilities are first class and the snorkelling is wonderful.
Make the effort if you are after a peaceful, romantic escape.
We loved our stay at Garden Island.

We had a wonderful stay at Namuka Bay, and would definitely recommend it if you're after a quiet relaxing beach stay. The staff were very friendly and personal. They upgraded us to a villa since there weren't many people there at the time. All of the rooms are beachfront with a balcony, the main difference being that the standard rooms have a shared bathroom and the villas have private bathrooms.
The food was amazing and not very pricey, all organic, grown on their farm. The best food I've tasted in Fiji! Have the coconut pancakes for breakfast.
Literally the only downside to this hotel is that it's about a 20 minute drive from the main highway down a bumpy dirt road. You would want a car if you're staying there for sure, as I imagine it could be quite isolating otherwise. There aren't that many activities, just the beach, horseback riding, and massages. Even on a rainy weekend we loved it though!!! Would definitely go back.
