The Shelfort hotel is a hidden gem for those who bring their walking shoes to St. Petersburg. Just a 20 minute walk from the Hermitage, the Shelfort is an oasis of calm in the midst of this busy city. Our room was clean and comfortable, the mattress firm and inviting. The breakfast, though fair, provided what we needed to start our engines for another day of sightseeing. I would recommend this hotel, and its english-speaking local staff, for anyone planning to visit this amazing city.

A reminder of the Soviet era, the only really good thing about this hotel is its location close to the Lenexpo conference Centre.
Set amongst menacing looking tower blocks, it has a lock o the front door which you have to ring, which is a concern when people are loitering at night.
The room was ok...the curtains were damaged which is not ideal when White Nights occur and the bathroom was not exactly spotlessly clean. It had a feeling of the 1970s and a smell to match. All very basic.
Despite a vehement no smoking policy, it stinks of old smoke - which I gathered was from staff smoking by a doorway which was left open.
The breakfast looked so uninviting that I did not try it.

I went to Russia to meet a wonderful girl. There was 1 receptionist named Margarita, who was especially helpful! She was very kind and motherly! The bathrooms are nice and clean and the shower can get as hot as you need it to be! The rooms come with a TV so if you have some free time you can catch a show. For breakfast you get hot Tea, or Coffee with some toast and your choice of delicious soft cheese or some fruit jam. Along with all this you can enjoy a croissant with chocolate in it! The hotel is a little hard to find, but it is great! Saint Petersburg was amazing and so was this Hotel!
