Having had some experience in old soviet style apartments I wasn't expecting much, but the hotel was a great surprise. Nice large rooms, kitchen and large living room. Furnishing was pretty good, and the kitchen had a washing machine! The Russian breakfast was a treat. Two 24 hour small super markets on the street a block or two away (no alcohol for sale past 11pm).
Note, even though the metro station is about a 10 minute walk away, rather catch a taxi from the Airport Express train station or from the airport itself. Remember to haggle the price beforehand. If the taxi driver puts you on the clock you'll pay dearly. Also, when checking out, do not take the metro, you will be marked as an easy target with your luggage. Rather spend the additional cash on a taxi to the airport (again remember to haggle the price.) We negotiated 1700 rubles, but we had a Russian speaker and we used an unmarked taxi.

The Pushkin Hotel is wonderfully placed, with a very slow 20 minute walk to Red Square, 15 mins to the Bolshoi and very close to Yeliseevskiy Gastronom and the Main shopping drag as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary History, Hermitage Gardens and Tchaikovsky Concert Hall. There are 2 Metro stations close by and the streets are safe. Location is therefore excellent and the hotel is exceptional value for money.
The hotel is spotlessly clean, room spacious, the beds are super comfortable and the amenities are good, although if you want to watch tv in English you will have to settle for news and discussion programmes. We ate at the hotel throughout our stay and the food was cheap and excellent in quality. The service was impeccable too. I don't understand why this hotel isn't listed on the Trip Adviser Moscow App....it is really very good indeed.
My primary thanks go to the amazing receptionist who not only seemed to work tirelessly 24/7, but found time independently to organise a card and gift for my partner's 50th birthday. We were overwhelmed by this gesture and thank you unreservedly. This member of staff went above and beyond the call of duty and really enhanced our experience; he also gave us excellent advice, chatted warmly, translated and booked a cheap taxi to the airport for us.
When I return to Moscow I will book the hotel Pushkin without a moment's thought and I would recommend others to do so too - brilliant experience.
We chose this hotel for its location to sightseeing and price. It was situated only 5 minutes from the metro and high speed train to our airport.
The hotel and its staff were excellent and breakfast which was not included was only £12 per head and excellent value. We used the metro exclusively and found it easy once you get used to the system and at approx £1.00 per journey good value and easy to sightsee Moscow
Difficult to find entrance but this is a utilitarian business hotel next to Lukoil headquarters and subway, walking distance to Kremlin, Red Square, GUM. Staff was lacking in English but pleasant and I was able to get by. Breakfast was an excellent buffet and they had an excellent business lunch at a good price.
The room was small and needed updating but was comfortable. Seemed like a good value.

Matreshka is for those who is on a very restricted budget. It's one step up from a hostel You will have Red Square and Bolshoy Theatre next to you. Look at the pictures of the rooms and make sure you know what you will get. I booked this hotel for my Russian relatives, who are not spoiled by the luxury of life and they were very happy with the hotel.
