Located at the heart of the French Quarter, the magnificent Hanoi Opera House represents the pinnacle of music and performance in Vietnam.

Whether you're on your way to a show or just fancy a walk, it's definitely worth having a look at the exterior of the opera house as a monument. The French modelled it on the Palais Garnier, the older of the two Paris opera houses, and it now stands as a landmark of colonial architecture in Vietnam: a Renaissance-style building incorporating many Gothic and Neo-Classical features. A wander around the outside of the building will lead you through the beautiful gardens that surround it.The opera house is of huge historical significance too. During the revolution, important talks were held here by politicians who were responsible for mapping out the future Democratic Republic of Vietnam (or North Vietnam). On top of this, the area around it became a battleground during Vietnam's struggle for independence, against the French and the Japanese.Entry into the Opera House is only granted with a ticket to a performance. Once you’ve found your way in, you're in for a treat. Not only are the shows and concerts here put on by the most respected artists from Vietnam and beyond, but the inside of the building itself is stunning too.The performances themselves range from the classic Italian and French operas, through ballets, symphony orchestras and folk concerts to traditional Vietnamese shows, There is something for everyone here, but the 600 capacity fills up fast so try to book in advance if you can.The Hanoi Opera House is easy to get to by bus or by taxi, and is located in August Revolution Square, in the French Quarter. Entry only with a ticket for a show – prices vary.
