Great base to do Tongariro Alpine Walk. Schappers bar is also another good option for drinks and food. Tatahi the Beach food and coffee truck near the Gas petrol station has delicious coffee and food :)

Good
Very small - not many food options. Better to bring your food in with you.

Excellent
We only had a night and a morning in this area. We should have allowed more time for exploring and hiking in the park.
"We were up at Waimarino to ski for the week with our two young children, the house was a perfect little bolt hole when weren’t on the mountain! Our only issues were that while there was a log burner and wood for it, unfortunately the wood was all rather damp and there was no way to chop any smaller kindling to even get the fire going, thank goodness for the heat pump, so we were all sorted! Also the Freeview box lost signal on our last night, but no biggie, we were all ready for an early night by then!"
