Home to one of the world’s first hydraulic cranes, this centuries-old dock is the historical and cultural centre of Liverpool. Come for restaurants, bars and museums.

Stay around Albert Dock for easy access to Liverpool’s best museums as well as its trendiest bars and restaurants. Located at the centre of the city, Albert Dock is an impressive historic site that still displays some of the antique features of its 19th-century origins even after its transformation into Liverpool’s cultural centre.

Constructed in 1846, Albert Dock was once at the forefront of maritime technology, with one of the first hydraulic cranes in the world. Walk along the dock to see several wooden ships from the dock’s early days. Since then, Albert Dock and the area surrounding it has been redesigned into a popular entertainment district.

Book a boat tour leaving from the dock to get a complete view of Liverpool’s historic waterfront. Enjoy the beautiful mix of brick and white-marble structures and learn their history from knowledgeable tour guides.

Liverpool’s premier galleries and museums fill the area around Albert Dock. Become an expert in the history of Liverpool’s sea trade at the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Nearby, the Beatles Story museum and the International Slavery Museum offer further opportunities to learn about Liverpool history. Admire Pollock and Picasso canvases alongside the works of British masters at the Tate Liverpool. Located right on the water, this is one of the most esteemed art galleries in the U.K.

Watch the sunset from the lively restaurant quarter, where residents and tourists converge in the evenings for dinner or a drink. You have to try fish and chips at least once in Liverpool, but if you’ve already exhausted this option, eat at one of the restaurants offering tasty ethnic fare. Try one of several locally brewed beers, which are on tap throughout the area.

Located on the River Mersey at the western side of the Liverpool city centre, Albert Dock is accessible on foot or by bus. If you are driving, park in the nearby 24-hour lot for a fee. The dock is open daily.
