Uncle Billy's Kona Bay Hotel

"Cheap & cheerful, easy to find."
Uncle Billy's is less that 10 miles from Kona airport, and easy to find. The rooms are fairly basic but comfortable, although the plumbing makes some strange noises sometimes. The staff are very pleasant and helpful, and will happily give you a different room if your current one has a leaky washbasin. A simple breakfast is included, as is use of the round pool and the children's pool. Nearby are lots of restaurants, and also agents who rent snorkeling kits and sell tickets to helicopter trips over the volcanoes and submarine trips in the bay.

"Nice room close to Volcano N. P."
The room was nice and clean. The hosts were very gracious and helpful with tips for restaurants, activities, etc. The end of the road is a very quiet place, you hear the birds singing, but it rains every day. Breakfast was adequate with 1/2 of a papaya, coffee, tea, juice, and toast, waffles, bagels, or banana bread according to your order.

"dated, but nice setting"
Imagine a 1960's hotel in a beautiful location. Very nice historical gardens close by. On Banyon road probably named because of the awesome Banyon trees planted in the early 30's.

"Nice Hotel "
We had a room facing the ocean and could watch the fish in the pond from our balcony. We could also watch the cruise ships come and go in the harbour. We rented a car and did a lot of sightseeing

"Ok not worth $159/night"
Convenient and great view of the water and downtown if you get the Legacy Suite. Otherwise they don't clean the room even when you ask, towels are really gross, bathroom is super questionable and if you need anything there is no one there. Not worth the money.

"Wonderful cottage feel, 10 min to Kilauea. "
Great B&B. Nice breakfast with cold/hot cereal, different types of toast, fresh local fruit, etc. Kistchy cottagey, welcoming feel. On a farm, roosters wake you up to remind you to get up to see the nearby (10 min drive) active volcano in time for watching the sun rise up over it. 45 min drive from Hilo airport. Very friendly & interesting owner. Great to chill, if desired, around the table in the dining room to discuss travels with other guests or read in the well appointed library. Free internet. Quite clean, not sparkling (i.e. Hard to reach places a little dusty- didn't bother me). Great base camp for exploring the big island.

"Serenity"
We booked at the Kalani Retreat because of its location, rather than for the lifestyle services and classes offered. We’re just travellers on a budget and were slightly concerned we may be treated as outsiders but needn’t have worried. On arrival we were checked-in without hassle, quickly and efficiently but with a friendly smile and were soon on our way to our bungalow. First sight was one of the few nasty surprises during our stay – the bungalows are semi’s with a party stud wall down the middle. I had wrongly assumed them to be single occupancy. There are also no glass windows – just insect screens, which wasn’t a problem, apart from a few coughs and footsteps during the night we didn’t hear a peep from next door. The bungalow isn’t huge, but is big enough to be comfortable. The bathroom is small but well fitted, clean and functional with toiletries provided. We planned to spend most of our time during the stay visiting the Volcanoes National Park (1 hour drive) and viewing live lava flows in Pahoa. The live lava flows didn’t co-operate and had been closed off during our visit, but Kalani isn’t a bad base to drive to the National Park, even though Kalani is a bit further south than we’d thought. Kalani is pretty isolated. You do need a hire car to get around and need to have meal options sorted as the nearest supermarket/restaurant is in Pahoa 9 miles away. The bungalow has a fridge, but keeping any food outside the fridge is not encouraged because of insect life. Kalani
