Sunshine Village is one of only three ski resorts in Banff National Park. It stretches across 1,335 hectares of snow-covered mountainside, and has 12 ski lifts busily running throughout the season, from the start of November until late May. As one season ends, another begins, with tramping very popular in the area from June until October.Banff is only 15 minutes from Sunshine Village, with Calgary located a 90-minute drive away, and there are regular bus services on a daily basis. Most visitors are day-trippers from one of these towns, as there is only one hotel at the resort. Other facilities are plentiful, with a choice of restaurants, shops, and all of the equipment you'll need from a variety of ski rental companies.Mount Standish, Goat's Eye Mountain and Lookout Mountain soar above, rising to a maximum height of 2,730 metres and providing the necessary slopes. Sunshine Village is high enough that the weather provides the rest, with 9 metres of perfectly soft and powdery snow each season.You can sign up for lessons when you arrive, or book them ahead of time – beginners, medium and advanced skiers are all catered for. Snowboarding is also very popular here. If you have a reasonable level of experience, get a guide and go off piste. You'll find plenty of pristine dry snow and lots of space to enjoy it.It's easy to find your way around, with maps at each lift, and well-marked runs. And, when it's time for a well-earned break, choose between nine different restaurants, with everything from a quick snack to fine dining catered for.The heights are home to a riot of colourful wildflowers in the summer months, there are hiking routes to suit all levels of fitness and experience, and you can also take one of the guided tours offered daily.Passes for the day or for the season can be bought online, in Banff or Calgary, or at Sunshine Village. Ski lifts operate every day during the skiing season.
