This luxury shopping district at the heart of central Seoul is the place to come for quality brand products and simply great food.

Myeongdong is Seoul’s most international shopping district, with global brands aimed squarely at those with Western tastes. The malls are big, busy and often staffed by English-speakers, making the central Myeongdong district the most accessible shopping experience for many tourists.

Myeongdong is the place to go if you’re tired of cheap knock-offs and imitations and are looking for the real deal. Divided into five different areas, Myeongdong Street is the main artery that cuts through the district, and is lined with international brands and big shopping centres. Two streets branch off from Myeongdong in opposite directions, both home to mid-range brands like Guess and Club Monaco.

Central Street is situated to the north and is where you can grab something to eat at international fast-food outlets, or pay a visit to the large National Souvenir Centre shopping centre. If fast food is not your thing, then explore the area’s many good Korean restaurants and cafés – make sure you try donkas, delicious deep-fried pork cutlets.

Just east of Myeongdong Street is the unusual Gothic-style Myeongdong Cathedral, the first brick-built cathedral in the city.

For something a little different, head to China Street, where you’ll find a cluster of Chinese shops and stalls. With its independent stores and cheap clothing, the area has a more eclectic and retro atmosphere compared to the global feel of the main strip. The area also has some great and authentic Chinese restaurants.

Most shops are open from mid-morning to late evening. To start at the southern end of the district, get off at Myeongdong subway station on Line 4. Alternatively you can begin at the north, and take the subway to Euljiro 1-ga.
