This may be the smallest of Seoul's Five Grand Palaces but it has a big soul and a mix of western and eastern architecture.

Along with Seoul’s other Grand Palaces, the Deoksugung has an interesting, if rather turbulent history. The palace has suffered destruction or ruin on various occasions, from the Japanese invasion of 1592 (which completely destroyed the city’s other grand palaces) right up to its occupation by the Japanese during the first part of the 20th Century. There have been various wings added and renovations made, including the National Museum of Art, but the Deoksugung is now just a third of its original size.

Start exploring the palace at the Geumcheon Bridge and then head to the beautiful Jeukjodang and the Junmyeongdang building, once the living quarters of the royal family. Don’t miss the 16th Century water clock the Borugak Jaguwongnu, one of the few original surviving structures within the palace complex.

The palace is known for the inclusion of Western style buildings alongside more traditional Eastern structures. Designed by a British architect and finished in 1910, Seokjojeon is now the location of an informative exhibition that takes you on a journey of the palace’s history. Jeonggwanheon was built at the turn of the 20th Century and is where the Emperor Gojong would sit and drink his daily coffee.

The grand hall of Junghwajeon is one of Deoksugung Palace’s highlights. An impressive space with elaborate interior design, this is where the leaders of the Great Korean Empire would meet to discuss the empire’s future. Don’t miss the stunning golden dragons on the ceiling above you. Bear in mind that Junghwajeon is sometimes closed to the public, so check before you visit if you are keen on seeing it.

Although it’s easy to explore the palace under your own steam, the free guided tours are highly recommended. Conducted on a daily basis and in English, the experienced guides will really bring the palace and its history to life. Deoksugung Palace is located at the City Hall subway station and is open every day except Mondays and public holidays.
