This new library is the largest library in Europe and houses vast collections of Shakespearean artefacts in its stunning contemporary building.

Originally called the Birmingham Central Library, it has now been renamed the Library Of Birmingham, and on 3rd September 2013, the newly-built contemporary library opened its doors in Centenary Square to the public. This brand new building, complete with museum, is housed over ten floors and even has a herb and vegetable garden on the 7th floor and a secret garden on the 9th floor. The building is styled in the most amazing contemporary architecture. It would be easy to spend a whole day here. Inside, you’ll find a huge collection of Shakespearean artefacts, books dating back to the 1500s, photographic displays and 19th century greeting cards. The Shakespeare collection consists of some 40,000 pieces including artefacts from the writer’s life, around 6,000 related photographs and 10,000 play programmes. Also included is a copy of the First Folio. Printed in 1623, it contains all of the writer’s plays. Children will love the Parker Collection, which includes children’s books and games. The oldest book in this collection dates back to 1538.There are impressive photography collections here including some by the Birmingham born politician Benjamin Stone. There is a collection of portraits from both America and Europe dating from the mid-1800s. Greeting cards printed in the 19th and 20th century make for a fascinating display as does the collection of silent movie music which is one of the largest in the country and contains a rare piece by Charlie Chaplin. There’s a special area for children, decked out in bright colours with soft comfy floor cushions for them to relax on. Whatever you are looking for, there are also expert librarians on hand to assist you. During the annual Birmingham Literature Festival, the library hosts a full programme of events including talks and poetry readings. Check the Library of Birmingham website for information about performances and event schedules.Situated in the city centre Library Of Birmingham is a short walk from several other major attractions including the newly refurbished Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Symphony Hall, Brindleyplace and Victoria Square. New Street train station is a fifteen minute walk away and buses stop on nearby Broad Street. The library is open every day of the year. Monday to Friday it stays open into the evening.
