Hotel JAL City Nagano

Hotel JAL City Nagano

10/10 Excellent
"I stayed at the JAL for 8 nights and was happy with the service. The location is great as it is a short walk to Zenkoji Temple, the Prefectural Museum and also to Nagano JR Station. Nagano was a fascinating city to visit and the JAL was situated in a good location for finding amenities such as shopping and food. I love to walk and I really enjoyed exploring the area around the hotel. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Although my room was rather crowded with 3 beds, it was kept clean and well stocked. My only complaint was that the breakfast for a Westerner was very limited and got predictable very quickly. The food was very good, presented well and tasted fine but after 8 breakfasts eating the same things I was ready for a change."

"Amazing old school Japanese hotel. Built by a railroad company almost a 100 years ago; the train you take there was built to get to this hotel. Artwork from the 1600’s on display. Staff shook my hand when I checked out. Even had beautiful stationery in the room; your iPhone spellcheck doesn’t even recognize that word anymore"

"One of the highlights of my trip. This is a very special place where the staff could not have been more warm and helpful. We booked the half board for 2 nights and the food was very traditional, high level Japanese cuisine which didn’t completely suit our teenagers (just something to be aware of) but the service was superb and the facilities (hot baths and room) amazing."

"This traditional ryotan was wonderful. It was a blend of traditional Japanese with modern updates. We booked a suite that had western beds and a private onsen. Our sons shared a smaller room with tatami mats. We selected the traditional dinner and breakfast which were wonderful experiences. If you do not like traditional Japanese food you may not like the meal option. The service was great and staff helpful, despite some language limitations. It was very conveniently located near the train station and monkey park. They provided shuttles services which we found helpful."

"While this is an older hotel, it is clean, things are in working order, and rather charming and unique. For example, I had a large room with a small patio that offered a beautiful view of the city. It’s in a quaint quiet town with gorgeous views of the mountains surrounding the town. I appreciated the thoughtful touch of hot green tea. The thermos amazingly kept the water hot even till the next morning. Because I went during « low » season in May, I was able to enjoy the onsen to myself ! The host/owner is a sweet man. It is rather expensive for one night but I did not regret my stay. I did get plenty of exercise being on the fourth floor with no elevator."

"Location is incredible, especially if traveling by train/bus. The hotel is 2 minute walk from station. There is a Lawson's very nearby as well. The staff is very nice, and the hotel was very quiet. They have free drinks, snacks daily in the lounge. I mistakenly mixed up our checkout date and didn't realize until after we were supposed to have checked out. The staff was VERY understanding and they allowed us to book an additional night at the same rate we already had. I would definitely stay here again."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Yudanaka Shibu Onsen?
The best area to stay in Yudanaka Shibu Onsen is either Shibu Onsen itself for a traditional ryokan experience or Yudanaka Onsen for slightly more modern conveniences.Shibu Onsen is the more historic and picturesque of the two, known for its cobblestone streets and nine public bathhouses, each with different mineral compositions. Guests staying in a ryokan here often receive a key to try all nine baths, a fun activity in itself. The area has a wonderfully preserved Edo-period feel, with traditional architecture lining the main streets.Couples looking for a romantic and traditional Japanese experience will find Shibu Onsen particularly appealing. The opportunity to stroll the streets in a yukata (a traditional Japanese garment) between onsen visits, perhaps stopping at small shops or cafes, creates a memorable stay. The village is also well-situated for easy access to the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park.Yudanaka Onsen, while still very traditional, offers a bit more variety in terms of accommodation and dining options, including some larger hotels. It's the main transport hub, with the train station providing direct links to Nagano City. This area is still very much focused on onsen bathing, with several large ryokans offering extensive private and public baths. For travellers who appreciate good value and convenience, Yudanaka Onsen can be a practical choice. The proximity to the train station makes arrival and departure straightforward, and there are typically more budget-friendly accommodation options available without sacrificing the onsen experience.
When is the best time to go to Yudanaka Shibu Onsen?
The best time to visit Yudanaka Shibu Onsen is during the winter months, typically from December to March, to experience the snow monkeys in their natural, snowy habitat. This period offers the iconic image of the Japanese macaques bathing in the Jigokudani Monkey Park's hot springs, surrounded by snow. The cold weather also enhances the experience of staying in a traditional ryokan and enjoying the region's many onsen. For those who enjoy winter sports, the nearby Shiga Kogen ski resort is usually in full swing during these months.Couples looking for a romantic getaway will find the winter months particularly appealing. Imagine enjoying the warmth of a private onsen with snow falling outside, followed by a delicious multi-course kaiseki dinner. The crisp air and the magical sight of the snow monkeys create a memorable atmosphere. While winter is popular, the autumn months, from late October to November, also offer stunning scenery with the changing leaves, and fewer crowds.
