Apparently they were doing renovations & my room absolutely wreaked of a sickly smell. Upon enquiring about this smell, they explained that it was because of the new wallpaper that had just been applied. The room itself was clean & comfortable, but the smell was terrible, sickening.

Tricky to find best way from Ueno station.
We got lost leaving Ueno station's many exits late at night and figuring out which of the many overpasses to use - used several of each.....didn't get to the hotel until about midnight but were thankfully being waited for by a very patient hotel staff man - thank you so much! Our only problem was not figuring out that the air con/heater could be adjusted by us (we thought it was fixed.....at 5 degrees! - very funny when you think about it, and probably reflected the huge travel day, flight delays, and getting lost in nigh time Tokyo full of the first snow for 10 yrs....).

Hotel with great location yet quiet surrounding
This hotel is close to Ueno station but yet in a very quiet area. This is very nice. Most (not all) Hotel staff are friendly and speak good english. Room size is big with small bathroom (typical tokyo size). They provide free coffee in the morning and same day luggage storage. You can leave your luggage overnight only if you the next booking, otherwise they charge.

Basics for great rate
Spent 2 nights. The staff varies quite a bit in how much English they speak. However they are all very helpful. Rooms are clean and have all the basics. Price is quite reasonable.3 or 4 block walk from the Ueno train station, tons of nearby restaurants and shopping opportunities. Also Ueno park (zoo and 3 or 4 museums) so plenty to do and see all within a 10 minute walk.

Not the easiest hotel to find but once you do, easy to get back to. 10 minute walk to Ueno Station which takes your u everywhere. Bathroom is the one piece unit and at 6'7" I was cramped. No complaint though, this IS Japan! Local eating establishments (various) within a 5 minute walk. (Ask the Front Desk about Yakitori!!!!)

Practical and Perfectly located
The hotel is a basic, no frills place. We got a first floor room with 2 double beds. There's a mini fridge (nothing inside, it's just a convenience for you), a hot water pot for tea (coffee is offered in the mornings at the lobby), and hotel kimonos with slippers for each patron. I didn't notice street noise, but then the road outside the window wasn't really built for cars. The beds were firm, but comfortable. For those that like pillow tops or memory foam, it may be considered really hard. They offered flatter or puffy pillows, just ask. The bathroom is RV compact, but cute. The bathtub was deep, made for soaking while sitting. When you showered, the length of the tub was about as WIDE as my tub at home, so it was pretty tiny. The shower head wasn't adjustable and felt like needles in spots. Hot water was pretty immediate and HOT. Non-disposable shampoo, conditioner, and bath wash liquid was offered, as was disposable toothbrush/toothpaste and razors. The nice staff also spoke some English. The location is a 5 min walk to Ueno Station, which means that it's also a 5 min walk to: Ueno Park, Ameyoko Shopping Street, and the shopping markets of Ueno. Because of the Panda Bridge, which is just for pedestrians and goes over a huge traffic area, you didn't have to worry about cars or even a crosswalk. There were at least 5 restaurants in our walking path between the hotel and the station. AND there's also a 24 hr convenience store within 3 minutes of the hotel.

Well placed for Ueno
The hotel is well placed for exploring Ueno Park and its surrounding shops and restaurants. It is only a mere 10-minute walk from the Skyliner station with direct connection to Narita Airport. The staff are generally friendly and helpful and are able to converse in basic English. Rooms are spacious by Tokyo standards but are basic. Like most Tokyo hotels, the toilets are small. The only setback is that there is no elevator in the hotel so if carrying your luggage up 2 flights of steps is a problem for you it is best to ask to be on the ground floor.

Great budget hotel in Tokyo
Tokyo is expensive. It is a city that costs a lot an this hotel helped us save. It was affordable in a convenient location. The staff were kind and the facilities (laundry) were helpful. There is no elevator but it is not a big deal. The rooms are small but clean. The bed was quite small for the two of us but it was cozy. I appreciated the yukata and slippers for us. It is just minutes away from the Ueno station. Just take the Irita exist and go across the pedestrian bridge to ensure you are on the right track.

Hotel Closes at 2am!!
The hotel is priced at a lower range and hence i didn't expect too much from it. But still in saying that, Japanese never disappointed and still shows their attitude in terms of customer service. The room is clean, bedding is clean and tidy, just the exhaust fan is a bit noisy. Room size is reasonable, but the bathroom is narrow as per usual Japanese hotels. The only thing I could complain is the location - its not that straight forward hence better to pay your patience to look around. The location on Google Map is exactly correct - so just follow instructions ^_^ . The other thing is I was returning at 2:05am after drinking with my friend but found that the hotel was closed - lucky after a while the keeper opened the door for me and advised me about the closing time. If you pay attention on it and you won't have the same trouble as me. In general the experience is not bad.

Decent place to stay for the money you pay.
I had a nice time in this hotel with the kind hotel staff. The room is small but that's what you pay for, plus it's not a place you should be spending a lot of time in. All of Tokyo is at your fingertips since the place is so close to the station. Pros: Very close to Ueno station Lots of places to eat around the area (both expensive and cheap places) Very nice hotel staff Staff knows enough English to understand what you're saying Cons: Room is very small (This was expected considering the price of the room) No elevator; luggage needs to be carried up by hand If you don't know where you're going it's very hard to find (I recommend using street view to see what it looks like before you get there)

Clean but uncomfortable
For a Japanese business hotel, this was one of the oldest I've stayed in. It features typically compact rooms with basic amenities such as a mini fridge, hot plate for heating water, and toiletries. However, the age of the establishment shows. The railing on the way up to the second floor is being held together (partially) by string, and the mattress was so soft from use that the springs threatened to push through the fabric. We stayed here in January, so it was necessary to run the heater lest we freeze to death (not enough covers on the bed), and the unit sounded like there was a small car engine up in the ceiling. It was incredibly loud and made it difficult to sleep. The people at the desk were courteous, and the location isn't far from Ueno Station, but that doesn't make up for the fact that I can't remember the last time that I've had such a poor night's rest in a hotel.

What are you looking for?
Are you looking for an inexpensive stay in the Ueno area? Well, the Hotel New Tohoku satisfies. It was a little hard to find but once you see the signs directing you it's all good. The room was small but had all I needed ( I was only spending two nights), TV, hot water pot for tea, unit bathroom, and a tiny fridge (fits about three maybe four 500ml bottles). The staff was very nice and multilingual, although conversational only. For the price, it was acceptable if you're looking for 4 stars or higher go somewhere else.

Right on the money
Have to say the staff at the hotel are awesome. Most of the staff understand some English and can help out finding places around the area and general inquiries. Our group of 5 stayed at the hotel for 10 nights during the beginning of May (during busy Golden Week). The hotel shower was a bathroom was a bit small for myself being taller. Someone 6'3'' or less can easily fit as far as height goes. Some rooms have dedicated A/C units while others share the buildings A/C. Problem there is that if another room says its too cold they will turn the A/C off :P But they were able to get our room a comfortable temperature after some fiddling with the thermostat. While the hotel does not have a safe, out our group of 5 that went nothing was stolen and they also offered to lock anything important in a locked room behind the main entrance counter downstairs in tamper-proof envelopes. Each day when you leave the hotel, you have to hand in your room key and they will give it back when you return. (It's just a key on a big fob) The staff are really good at remembering their guests so no worries about getting the wrong key. My bed was a little old and hard to sleep on and so was my friends bed which had a spring sticking out on the side, but once Golden Week had finished the staff ordered some new beds for us so sleep on. The other 3 people had comfortable beds. No bugs or pests. Overall, for the price we paid it was right on the money.

Convenien launching pad for the greater Tokyo area
If all you need is a comfortable bed every night after a long day of adventuring in Tokyo, this is a good place. Once you find it, it's very easy to get to from Ueno Station -- took us less than 10 mins to walk between them, even closer if you take a metro exit. They clean the room every day and you always have a newly made bed and new yukata pajamas to sleep in, which is great when you just want to relax. The rooms are definitely small, but it was enough room for me to sit at the desk on my laptop and for my 6'3" fiancé to relax on the bed with his tablet for an hour or so before sleeping. The bathroom is so small only one person can fit in there at a time, just barely, but it's not that big of a deal. Other than that, we didn't really hang out in the room. We spent two weeks at this hotel and it wasn't until the end of our stay that we had a night where cigarette smoke coming from somewhere in the hotel stunk up our room. I hope it was a rare issue! My only other complaint is that I had a souvenir coffee can that got thrown away because the maids thought it was trash. So hide things that might look like they should be tossed if you want to keep them! Otherwise, the staff was overall super friendly, very nice, and helpful. It started to feel like we were renting a room in somebody's house. We'll definitely come back here.

convenient location with easy access to subway
We liked the hotel because of its location and price. It is very near to the subway station, major attractions, like Ueno Park, and Ueno Zoo, as well as restaurants and shops. The hotel itself was rather quaint and our room was simply furnished. The room was clean and neat. However, we hardly had enough room to walk around in when we laid out our luggage. The bathroom was so compact that it could only fit one person. I could hardly move around in the bathroom without bumping in to the wall. The bed was fairly comfortable. We were happy to have access to the free Wi-Fi. Since the hotel did not have an elevator, we had to use the stairs to get to our room on the second floor. It was a little difficult carrying our luggage up and down the stairs. Aside from that, we had a pleasant stay.

The human touch makes it all ok
I have forgotten that I made a booking for a small double room. Read reviews of bigger rooms but when I saw my room at the end of the night after a tiring day out, I was quite disappointed. Alas, the fault was in my own choice. The place itself it very nice, cosy and small - nothing new in Japan. WIFI is provided at the lobby and you can store your luggages before and after your checkin/out. There are 2 minimarts nearby within walking distance and JR Ueno Station is very very near. I must say the hospitality of the owner here is top notch. He takes care of us very well. Pleasant to talk to and friendly sincere smile makes it all better. I have nothing to complain. Eventhough the room was small, it was the hospitality that won us over. Kudoz!
