This iconic Shanghai landmark is home to a wealth of entertainment for the whole family, with shopping, fine dining and breathtaking panoramic views.

The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower is the most recognisable landmark in the Shanghai skyline, thanks to the distinctive spheres, or pearls, that feature in its design. Whilst it is a fully functioning transmission tower, it is also home to a multitude of attractions, including a museum, shops, restaurants and observation decks.

This tower comprises 11 separate spheres in total, which are supported by three gigantic columns. Including the transmission antenna, it reaches a height of 468 metres. With the expanse of green lawn that surrounds the base of the tower, many believe that the design embodies a famous Tang Dynasty poem celebrating the sound of pearls falling onto a jade plate.

Start your visit with a tour of the Shanghai Municipal History Museum, located at the foot of the tower. Fascinating exhibits and multimedia presentations chart the development of the city.

Jump into the double-decker lift to be whisked skywards at the rate of seven metres per second. During the ascent, the attendants will provide you with key facts about the tower’s design and construction, both in Chinese and English.

The first stop is the largest of the spheres, measuring 50 metres in diameter. Here you’ll find the Oriental Pearl Science Fantasy World, a perfect family attraction, with 3D cinemas and laser shows. It is also home to a large shopping centre offering arts and crafts, jewellery, fashion and food outlets.

Make time for dinner with a difference at the revolving restaurant in the second sphere. One full revolution lasts an hour, so you will get to see the full view of the city. For an even more spectacular panorama, head up to the top sphere, or “space capsule”. Thanks to the glass floor, you will feel as if you are floating 350 metres above ground.

The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower stands in Pudong Park in Lujiazui. It is open every day until 9:30 pm, and entrance fees are charged for the museum and attractions. The closest metro station is Lujiazui.
