This is one of the most popular attractions in Melbourne, and will answer any questions you may have about the culture and natural environment of Victoria.

Skilfully bringing together impressively detailed permanent exhibits and exciting temporary ones, the Melbourne Museum hosts eight different galleries across three floors. On the top floor, the development and evolution of Melbourne is explored through 1,200 distinct objects, each telling a story of the city's growth. Come and learn about a true Australian sporting hero, the racehorse Phar Lap, in the Melbourne Gallery, before examining the plant and animal life of the province of Victoria in the Forest Gallery. Next up is the Mind and Body Gallery, which offers visitors fascinating scientific insights into how their own bodies work. The Koori Voices exhibit, a real favourite, looks at the history and lives of Victoria’s First Peoples, while a life-size skeleton of a Blue Whale takes up residence in the Science and Life Gallery where the earth and how it functions is brought to life. For the younger members of your family, the Children’s Gallery and Garden are a treat, as is the IMAX Theatre with its choice of much-loved big screen films and informative documentaries.Temporary exhibits range broadly, from art, photography and industrial technology to First Peoples’ tools and ways of life. Guided tours are available, as well as regular lectures – check the website before your visit for details. The Discovery Centre research facility offers a deeper look into the contents of the museum and, if you want to bring your learning home with you, the gift and bookshop is great for picking up a beautiful book or souvenir of your trip. And if your energy starts to wane after an educational day, there are a choice of snacks and meals available at the Museum Café so you can recharge your batteries. The Melbourne Museum can be found in Carlton Gardens, opposite the imposing Royal Exhibition Hall. It's a short stroll from the city centre, and is on a number of bus and tram routes. There is also a pay car park for visitors. The museum is open year-round, except for Good Friday and Christmas Day, and there is an admission fee.

Great place to visit, lots of things to look at. Just make sure you leave enough time. We were there for 3+ hours and could have stayed another hour or 2, but it was closing time when we left.
