The Melbourne Museum, the Royal Exhibition Building and many more cultural sites are located within this charming, tranquil public park.

A short walk from the city centre will take you away from the bustle of downtown Melbourne and into Carlton Gardens, a sprawling public park that hosts a variety of exciting cultural attractions. Delve into the past at the Melbourne Museum, explore the Royal Exhibition Building and navigate the gardens’ lovely displays of natural bounty.

Carlton Gardens was established in 1880. It was originally designed for the Melbourne International Exhibition, and at the time its Great Hall was Australia’s largest building. The park has gone from strength to strength over its long history, eventually gaining World Heritage Site status on account of its aesthetic, cultural and scientific importance to the city. Now this spot is a favourite of locals and tourists alike, who are drawn to its serene atmosphere and its numerous attractions.

Some 24 hectares (64 acres) of land is included in the Carlton Gardens, most of which is dedicated to public green space and impressive displays of Victoria’s flora. Stroll through the park’s stunning gardens and flower arrangements and admire the diverse mixture of European and native Australian trees.

Look out for the classical water fountains that are strewn across the gardens. The circular French Fountain is a highlight, as is the Victorian-era Hochgurtel Fountain. Take your kids to the Carlton Gardens’ delightful playground. Designed as a Victorian maze, this playground is packed with climbing frames, slides and hiding places.

Admire the elegant dome of the Royal Exhibition Building, then explore the interior on a guided tour. Head to the Melbourne Museum to see a range of displays on such diverse topics as the history of dinosaurs and science and technology. At the IMAX theatre, you can watch 3-D movies on the third-largest screen in the world.

Carlton Gardens are located in the northeast of Melbourne’s central business district. It is easily accessible by taking the tram to stops on Victoria Street or Nicholson Street, or by taking the bus down Rathdowne Street. The Parliament Railway Station, just 2 minutes’ walk away, provides access to all the city’s subway lines.
