Mercure Nagano Matsushiro Resort & Spa

10/10 Excellent
"⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely Outstanding – One of the Best Hotels We’ve Ever Stayed At! The Mercure Nagano Resort exceeded every expectation and was easily one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. The hotel is perfectly situated on the outskirts of the city, making it incredibly easy to access, with plenty of free parking and the convenience of being able to come and go at any time of the day or night. It’s the perfect base for exploring the region while enjoying a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The breakfast deserves a special mention—it was, without question, the best hotel breakfast we’ve ever had anywhere in the world. The selection was simply incredible, with an enormous variety of Western favourites alongside authentic Japanese, Chinese, and other Asian dishes. Every morning felt like dining at a premium restaurant, and there was something new to try each day. For anyone visiting during ski season, the facilities are outstanding. The hotel has dedicated ski and snowboard drying rooms, secure lockers, modern self-service laundry facilities with new washers and dryers, and excellent male and female onsens that were the perfect way to relax after a day on the slopes. The rooms were spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the staff were warm, welcoming, and always happy to help. We travel frequently and stay in hotels all over the world, and Mercure Nagano Resort has set a new benchmark. If we could give it more than five stars"

The best time to go to Kusatsu is generally during the cooler months, from late autumn to early spring, particularly if you're seeking the quintessential onsen experience. For those who enjoy crisp weather and the beauty of autumn foliage, late October and November are ideal. The surrounding mountains are awash with reds, oranges, and yellows, making for stunning scenery while you relax in the hot springs. It's also a good time to enjoy outdoor activities like gentle strolls around the Yubatake (hot water field).Winter, from December to February, offers a magical experience with the chance of snow-covered landscapes, which adds a special charm to soaking in the outdoor onsen. The air is cold, making the warmth of the hot springs even more inviting. This period is particularly popular with couples looking for a romantic getaway, as the snowy scenery and cosy ryokans create a lovely atmosphere. If you prefer milder weather for exploring the town and its surroundings on foot, spring (March to May) is also a pleasant time.
