Housed within a striking building designed by Latvian-American architect Gunnar Birkerts, this free museum is one of the celebrated cultural landmarks of Kansas City. Birkerts’ inspiration was progress in modern art, and his extraordinary creation takes the form of a bird in flight. The outside of the museum rivals the collection inside for interest and entertainment. Wander through the grounds to admire the striking building from different angles and view an impressive array of sculptures, including a giant spider and a surprising modern version of Rodin’s famous Thinker. The collection of artworks from the early 20th century to the present day was amassed by wealthy local philanthropists Bebe and Crosby Kemper, who succeeded in raising the necessary funds to open their private collection to the public in 1994. Over 700 pieces comprise the permanent catalogue, including valuable works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Arthur Dove, Damien Hirst and Hung Liu, among others. A series of galleries houses paintings and sculptures, installations and photography from major North American and international artists. The museum also hosts a programme of temporary exhibitions, showcasing artists and media that complement the permanent displays.Visitors can join one of the free guided tours to learn more about the museum’s fascinating and valuable treasures. There’s no need to book ahead, and a schedule of dates and times can be consulted in advance on the museum website. One of the highlights of a visit to the museum is a meal at Café Sebastienne, one of Kansas City’s most popular eateries. The café serves up delicious light snacks every lunchtime and is also open for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings, when booking is strongly recommended. The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is situated off Warwick Boulevard and can be easily reached by public transport or car, with free on-site parking provided. Admission is free and the museum is open every day except Monday.
