The Starlight Theatre can trace its origins back to 1925, when Queen Marie of Romania visited Kansas City and remarked on the city’s lack of a suitable venue to showcase drama and local talent. It was not until 1949, when construction of an outdoor auditorium began in Swope Park, that the project finally came to fruition. Now this historic venue is one of only three surviving self-producing outdoor theatres in America, with a reputation for excellence which allowed it to thrive while others fell by the wayside. The theatre’s relatively small size means that even large-scale productions have an intimacy that is lacking in larger venues. The front row’s proximity to the stage bridges the gap between audience and performers, creating a unique bond. Everyone on stage, from huge Broadway musical casts to solo artists, feels connected to the moment. A canopy of stars puts the finishing touches to this special atmosphere.Size is the only thing that’s small about this legendary Kansas institution. The ambitious programme covers everything from popular musicals such as Chicago, Mamma Mia, The Wizard of Oz and Grease to comedy shows, concerts and dance performances. There’s something happening practically every evening, and it doesn’t stop for the weather! Raincoats and waterproof ponchos are allowed in the auditorium, but not umbrellas, as these obscure the view of the action – so dress appropriately and don’t let a few showers spoil the fun!The Starlight Theatre is in Swope Park, around 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Kansas City. Individual performance times vary according to season and type of show. Tickets may be purchased at the venue on the night but they usually sell out quickly for popular shows, so it’s best to book in advance to avoid disappointment. There is on-site parking for a moderate charge.
