Hawaii offers a sublime snorkelling experience in one of the best spots in the world, home to over 400 exotic species.

As you turn off the Kalnianaole Highway, about 16 kilometres east of Waikiki, you will be greeted by signs leading you to one of the most beautifully unspoilt corners of the world. Hanauma Bay was born out of an old volcanic crater that eroded over time and allowed the ocean to flow in, bring a plethora of marine life with it. Now this watery world is yours to explore.

Bring your snorkelling gear and dive into the pure waters, where you'll discover everything from butterfly fish to sea turtles gliding elegantly through the beautiful coral reefs. And don’t worry if you don’t have equipment a bay-side rental shop can provide everything you could possibly need for an unforgettable snorkelling experience.

To learn more about this underwater habitat before you wade in, stop at the volcanically-shaped Marine Education Center. The geographical nuances of the area are thoroughly explained by the exhibits in this excellent exhibition, and the theatre plays an informative short film that gives visitors a deeper understanding of the biodiversity of the region. The Marine Education Center is open all year round, but closes every Tuesday.

Before heading down to the beach, pick up a fish identification chart from the Marine Education Center reception. You can take these detailed cards down onto the beach with you so that you can identify any species that you spot – a fun activity for families with young children. You can then test your memory by spotting as many different species as possible as you snorkel around the bay. There are over 400 fish and sea-life species to seek out in the waters here, so immerse yourself in a mass of colourful elegance as you watch this unique ecosystem glide and flap though the maze of corals below.

Come fully prepared with a packed lunch to stay on the beach all day, or splash the cash at the beach-side snack shop a great place to replenish your energy after your aquatic work out. Then return to the clear waters of Hanauma Bay to absorb more of this natural delight.

Very limited actual sealife to see when snorkelling. Found other beaches such as up past Haleiwa on the coast, where the turtles are, far better for snorkeling. It was also really quite cold when we were there (early March). Laniakea beach is my pick :-)

Beautiful. Get in early as it closes at 5pm.

Definitely a snorkeling beach. Need reef shoes to enter the water as it is extremely rocky. If you are looking just to swim there are other better beaches around.

Best to look for trip deals in person.

Go early. Very busy and again not a lot of shade. If possible take your own beach umbrella. More fish to be seen on the left side of the beach.

Busy but great place
