Ever since Burt Lancaster swept Deborah Kerr into his arms in the 1953 movie "From Here to Eternity", Hawaii’s Halona Beach has been indelibly linked with that famous screen kiss. Waikiki’s quieter, more picturesque neighbour is a favourite haunt for lovers in search of peace and tranquillity, so it’s not surprising to learn that it’s known locally as Eternity Beach! But this breathtaking cove has more to offer than just a romantic getaway, and your memories are sure to last longer than that brief kiss, no matter how iconic!
The currents along this part of the coast can be strong, so bathing and bodysurfing is advisable only for confident swimmers, but the secluded sandy beach is a perfect spot for sunbathing while the youngsters splash around safely in the tide pools. Spread out a giant family picnic and watch the fishermen bring home their catch from Bamboo Ridge, adjoining the beach to the west. The marine life is plentiful in these parts and sometimes you might be lucky enough to spot a sea turtle as it pops its green head above the waves. If the tides are in your favour and the currents are moderate, a spot of snorkelling may even bring you face to face with a friendly turtle skimming through the surf.
Another marine treat to look out for are the humpback whales, especially during their winter migration, when they come close to shore. Head for the Halona Blowhole and scan the horizon for their characteristic shapes in the water. At other times of year, you can still enjoy one of nature’s most spectacular water features at high tide, as huge plumes of water burst through the blowhole and crash onto the rocks nearby.
Eternity Beach is around 16 kilometres to the east of downtown Honolulu. Free parking is available on the clifftop and access to the beach is down the rocks via the signposted path to the blowhole. You are generally advised not to leave valuables in your car.
