Aotea Square Tours and Activities

Aotea Square
Aotea Square showing a square or plaza

The heart of Auckland is this expansive paved area. Attend a local market, open-air concert or community event on its grassy terraces.

Get a feel for Auckland’s community spirit at Aotea Square, the city’s favourite destination for open-air events and local gatherings. Join festivals, markets, parades, cultural events and rallies at this large open space in the centre of the city. Alternatively, take a quiet moment to sit on a park bench and observe the bustle of the square and its variety of surrounding architecture.

Bordered by some of Auckland’s central streets, Aotea Square encompasses 4,500 square metres (48,440 square feet) and is the inner city’s largest open area. Enjoyed by locals and visitors since its opening in 1979, the square has undergone several renovations over the years to make it a contemporary event site and a pleasant spot to explore. Stroll around the square’s granite paving and up the steps to terraced lawns, shaded by native trees. Pick a patch of grass or take a seat on one of the benches to people-watch and enjoy the square’s community atmosphere.

Note the Edwardian architecture of the beautifully restored Auckland Town Hall and the 1920s grandeur of the Civic Theatre. To the west, you’ll see the modern paned-glass façade of Auckland’s premier theatre and events venue, the Aotea Centre. Spot a number of public artworks in the square. Spy the Waharoa gateway outside the Aotea Centre. Near the Town Hall, you can see bronze figures of a former mayor of Auckland and a Maori warrior.

You might encounter a range of different events at the square, such as open-air concerts, markets or workshops. Check online to find out what events and festivals are occurring during your stay.

Aotea Square is located in central Auckland and is easily reached on foot from other inner-city destinations. Catch local buses to the stops that line the surrounding streets or park in the large parking facility below the square. The square is open day and night and is free to enter, however, some temporary events held in the square may be ticketed.
