All across Hawaii, there are many stunning waterfalls to marvel at and explore. However, many of them are hidden away in remote, hard-to-reach parts of the island, making them difficult or strenuous to access. The Akaka Falls State Park is far more accessible. It’s just a short drive away from Hilo, and is one of the most impressive you’ll find in Hawaii.
Before you reach the main attraction, stop off and listen to the therapeutic sound of the 30.5-metre-high Kahuna Falls. The Akaka Falls meanwhile plunges to a remarkable 135 metre depth, though both are conveniently located close together on a paved loop trail that will take you 800 metres through the rainforest.
The trail gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy the natural ambience of the rainforest as well as see the falls in all their splendour. Even though the trail is highly popular with visitors, the setting is relaxed and remarkably not too crowded. The trail is suitable whatever your age and fitness level, with only a gentle incline at both waterfalls.
As you explore the rainforest, you’ll be able to find out more about the natural life here. Information panels on display along the trail give plenty of interesting information about the flora and fauna all around you.
Then when you finally arrive at the falls, stop for a while at the lookout, where you can take a seat and enjoy some respite accompanied by the sight and the powerful thundering sound of the waterfall’s gushing water. When you reach Akaka Falls you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the water surrounded by the beautiful gorge’s vegetation.
Situated 18 kilometres to the north of Hilo, you can reach the trail by car. Your fee to enter the park itself also covers the cost of parking. The park opens daily throughout the year and there are toilet facilities available.
