A beach park that’s perfect for families and one of the Hilo Region’s best swimming spots, and where a whole world of marine science is waiting to be discovered.
Hilo’s only black sand beach is a relaxing spot for swimming and surfing and has sheltered rock pools just waiting to be explored. Named after the Richardson family, the house on the beach dates back to the 1920s and today is better known as the Richardson Ocean Center, where visitors can come to learn not only about the family but also about the region’s fascinating marine life.
The beach is a secluded, protected spot perfect for younger visitors thanks to the natural seawall that has formed from lava from Mauna Kea. This ensures no swells or currents affect the water in this area, whilst rock pools fill up at high tide keeping the waters shallow enough for paddling and exploring.
Head past the seawall and you’ll spot surfers venturing into the waters. The unpredictable conditions make it suitable only for more experienced surfers, but you could try body boarding in shallower spots if you’re not a confident surfer.
To see more of the beach and its backdrop, rent a kayak. They are available at a modest price from any of the vendors along the beach. This is the perfect way to spot the sea turtles and the monk seals loitering in this part of the island. Bring along your mask and snorkel and dip your head into the water to see life beneath the surface.
Drop into the Ocean Center, just above the beach, to learn all about the local marine life. This former home of Elsa and George Richardson has since been converted into an education centre and research facility and is well worth a visit.
Situated less than 10 kilometres to the east of Hilo, Richardson Ocean Park is free to enter and opens every day. Public transport does not serve the park though some chartered tours are available. It is best to visit by car, and you’ll find plenty of free parking spaces.
