Hotel Coco Grand Ueno Shinobazu - Tokyo Hotels

Hotel Coco Grand Ueno Shinobazu

Great location right across from the Shinobazu pond at Ueno Park. One of the few areas of Tokyo where a random stroll will often prove interesting. Hotel staff and amenities (especially the communal Japanese bath on the second floor) were great. Buffet breakfast does better with traditional Japanese items than it does with western dishes. Several fine Japanese restaurants within doors of the Hotel. Full array of restaurants at Ueno station, which is five minutes away. The rooms and bathrooms were small, of course, but this is Tokyo.

"Nice-sized rooms"
We had requested a non-smoking room, but received a smoking room that had gotten "extra cleaning." It was OK, although there was a slight smoke smell.

"Close to transportation"
This was a great hotel, if you get the bigger room. The double occupancy/single is very very small so if you have alot of bags it will not work. We upgraded which was an amazing room! Breakfast was wonderful with many options. Although I would not book this again and rather look for a non smoking hotel. If they just had non smoking it would be great!

Decent hotel, worth the price. Pretty much what you'd expect from a 'business hotel'. Staff doesn't speak much English.

"Very nice location"
The staff at Mitsui-Garden Ueno were a pleasure to work with and extremely courteous. The room was well laid out for the size. The hotel is very easy to get to because upon arrival at Ueno station, exit the main entrance and look left. Ueno park is within a 15 minute walk and so is the shopping district. Wish I had more time to explore the surrounding areas.

The Edo Sakura

"Cosy and authentic"
Stayed at the Edo Sakura for 5 nights in one of their Japanese Tatami-style rooms. As expected, the room was small but clean and cosy! I thought I was going to get a backache sleeping on the floor but to my surprised, I didn't. Still, it would be nice if the mattress was twice the thickness. Didn't watch the 20-22inch TV in the room as all the channels was in Japanese but the internet was free and fast. The rest of the hotel facilities are at the ground floor near the lobby/reception counter. There is a nice tea-ceremony room where guests can watch the 30-min demonstration at 10am. The public bath is also on the ground floor and can only fit 2 persons each time. The lift was really fast for a small hotel. I was a bit doubtful when choosing the hotel as it is located in a sub-urban neighbourhood. Thankfully, it's located near a school so it was easy to find it on Google Map. It only took us a day to get used to the train system and the closest one, Iriya Station is just 5 minutes away from the hotel. Eventually, the location of the hotel turned out to be a blessing. After roaming around the busy areas of Tokyo, we came to appreciate the peacefulness when walking back to the hotel. Finally, hotel staff were very helpful and can speak good English. Highly recommended to all except those who prefers staying close to the main shopping districts like Shibuya/Shinjuku which are about 30 minutes ride. Tsukiji, Akihabara, Asakusa and Ginza were convenient to get from the hotel

Pocket Guide: Tokyo Ueno 3 stars Hotels

This area offers a glimpse of what life was like before the economic boom of the 1970s and 1980s. Neighboring Asakusa, it is best known for the Ameya-yokocho Arcade, a busy market with interesting stalls. Ueno-koen, a sprawling park with monuments, zoo, pagodas, and a pond, is a must-do. Museums and galleries abound in the area.
