"Small but convenient"
The hotel was very small and dated but the location was a plus. We really enjoyed the free tea and coffee on the 2nd floor and the breakfast. We would definitely stay there again :)

"Budget hotel good location"
I got this hotel because of decent price and location by Ueno station, which made it easy to get to/from airport on the Keisai train, and local travel using the Ginza subway line as well as JR loop line around Tokyo. The bed was a little hard and temperature control spotty. I had to communicate with staff about thermostat not working properly, and they made adjustments then. The most annoying detail is the bathroom with having to step over the floor partition at the door, which is worse in the middle of the night when you forget its there and stub your foot. Otherwise it did the job at my budget level and as a single traveler. It was my first time in Japan but I knew the rooms were small. There is a Lawson convenience store 2 min away and a drink vending machine in the lobby. Also the internet wifi did OK. I would go there again, unless for an extended stay.

"Small"
The only thing I wish I would've paid attention to in the other reviews is the spaciousness (or lack thereof). When I say small, I mean small. My wife is 5'3" and she was able to touch both walls. The hotel was centrally located and the area was safe. It was a 5 minute walk to the train station (both the train to get to the airport and the local train routes). If you are traveling by yourself, it's not going to be bad but put another person in the room and I'm sure it will start to become claustrophobic after a day.

"Walking distance to train station."
This hotel was a long walk or short train ride to plenty of tourist sites. The breakfast was OK but not worth the money.

"Great Hotel"
The staff were helpful and polite. Staff explained that there were no elevators and offered straight away to carry my heavy suitcase up to the third floor where our room was. We had a medium size fridge in our room and not the usual tiny bar fridge. This would have been handy if we were going to make use of the kitchen and eating area down stairs. The only problem that I found was the banging of the metal doors throughout the hotel.

"Nice-sized rooms"
We had requested a non-smoking room, but received a smoking room that had gotten "extra cleaning." It was OK, although there was a slight smoke smell.

"Cosy and authentic"
Stayed at the Edo Sakura for 5 nights in one of their Japanese Tatami-style rooms. As expected, the room was small but clean and cosy! I thought I was going to get a backache sleeping on the floor but to my surprised, I didn't. Still, it would be nice if the mattress was twice the thickness. Didn't watch the 20-22inch TV in the room as all the channels was in Japanese but the internet was free and fast. The rest of the hotel facilities are at the ground floor near the lobby/reception counter. There is a nice tea-ceremony room where guests can watch the 30-min demonstration at 10am. The public bath is also on the ground floor and can only fit 2 persons each time. The lift was really fast for a small hotel. I was a bit doubtful when choosing the hotel as it is located in a sub-urban neighbourhood. Thankfully, it's located near a school so it was easy to find it on Google Map. It only took us a day to get used to the train system and the closest one, Iriya Station is just 5 minutes away from the hotel. Eventually, the location of the hotel turned out to be a blessing. After roaming around the busy areas of Tokyo, we came to appreciate the peacefulness when walking back to the hotel. Finally, hotel staff were very helpful and can speak good English. Highly recommended to all except those who prefers staying close to the main shopping districts like Shibuya/Shinjuku which are about 30 minutes ride. Tsukiji, Akihabara, Asakusa and Ginza were convenient to get from the hotel

Pocket Guide: Tokyo Ueno 3 stars Hotels

This area offers a glimpse of what life was like before the economic boom of the 1970s and 1980s. Neighboring Asakusa, it is best known for the Ameya-yokocho Arcade, a busy market with interesting stalls. Ueno-koen, a sprawling park with monuments, zoo, pagodas, and a pond, is a must-do. Museums and galleries abound in the area.
