The natural forces of the Sea of Cortez and the powerful Pacific Ocean are responsible for the creation of the dramatic El Arco. Millions of years of wind and wave erosion have bored this incredible arch formation into the headland at the tip of Mexico's Baja Peninsula.El Arco is evocative and romantic. It looms up out of the water like a doorway to the high seas, and marks the beginning of Land's End, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. Pirate ships used to roam the seas here during the 16th century, hiding behind rocky outcrops in order to plunder gold from passing Spanish galleons.Land's End is close enough to Cabo San Lucas to come by kayak you can rent one in the town. Otherwise catch a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or book a cruise on a glass-bottomed boat. If you go for the latter option you'll get to see some of this area's beautiful tropical fish. As you approach, take some photos of the view of the El Arco from the water, and keep an eye out for sea lions on the rocks. If wildlife's your thing, come between December and March for some whale-spotting. Late in the year whales begin their migration from the Arctic to the warm, shallow waters of the Sea of Cortez. It's here that they give birth and nurture their young.Once you've visited the magnificent El Arco, why not spend the rest of the day at the adjacent Playa del Amor. This “Lover's Beach” is the perfect place to relax or take a walk, its soft white sand contrasting with the dramatic rocky scenery. Watch as the sun sets, casting El Arco in a new light. Or go snorkelling or scuba diving in the clear waters. If you are planning on taking a dip at Land's End, please note that the Pacific side is often unsafe for swimmers, due to its very strong currents. Part of what makes Playa del Amor so peaceful and idyllic is its lack of shops and facilities, so it's best to bring your own food and drink. On busier days there will be some local vendors renting out parasols and selling snacks.
