Situated within Pike National Forest, 113-kilometres south of Denver, Pikes Peak is a majestic mountain range renowned for its sweeping vistas and stunning natural scenery. Stretching an impressive 4,300 metres into the blue Colorado sky, this national historic landmark attracts thousands of visitors every year including families, nature lovers, photographers and anyone else who has an appreciation of nature and adventure. For outdoor enthusiasts, a popular route to the top is the spectacular Barr Trail which runs from the railway depot in Manitou Springs and winds eastward through forest and meadow towards the summit. Visitors can walk, tramp, or bike up, depending on individual fitness levels. However, bear in mind that at 19 kilometres, this is quite a challenging route, even for the experienced tramper. For most visitors, the best way of accessing the summit is via the Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway which takes passengers from the base station at Manitou Springs all the way to the top of the mountain. In fact, for many, this railway journey is Pikes Peak’s main attraction. Before you set off, bear in mind that a round trip generally takes three hours and ten minutes. Also, it’s a good idea to purchase water and snacks from the Cog Railway Café as there are no refreshments available on the train and the restaurant at the summit can be very busy at peak times. The trip starts out by winding through Ruxton Creek, passing through dense Englemann spruce and ponderosa pine trees before reaching the cascading Minnehaha Falls waterfall. Next it’s through a dark mountain passage known as Hell’s Gate before emerging into the sunlight and Deer Park. As the train gently trundles from here up the steep incline, take a moment to gaze across the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountains, luscious valleys and glistening lakes. Lake Moraine and Almagre Mountain are particularly pretty from this vantage point. As you continue to climb, keep an eye out for cuddly yellow-bellied marmots and bighorn sheep as they scuttle through the tundra. At the summit, pause and soak up the panoramic views as they sweep across the horizon. Headaches and nausea are common for those not used to the high altitude of these peaks and so the time at the top is limited to 40 minutes. But don’t worry, this is plenty of time to explore and get some great photos before experiencing it all again on the way back down!
