This remarkably scenic city is blessed with abundant natural beauty and home to an intriguing pioneer heritage.

Colorado Springs is a fascinating city set against a an unbelievable backdrop. Not just a pretty face, Colorado’s second-largest metropolis also boasts an impressive heritage of mining, gold, and frontier life. Still, the dramatic beauty of the surrounding landscape continues to draw a great many visitors, and it will not take you long after touching down to see why.

The iconic Pikes Peak is a must-see for visitors to Colorado Springs. This gorgeous mountain, which is part of the Rockies, has some serious historical pedigree. In the 19th century, it was a symbol for the region’s great gold rush. Hike to its 4,302-metre (14,115-foot) tall summit along the popular Barr Trail, or take the Pikes Peak Cog Railway for a relaxing ride to the top. Note that the railway is closed in January and February.

Descend the great mountain and enter the Garden of Gods city park, which is located at the foot of Pikes Peak. Here you will find a remarkable red rock formation as well as a number of other beautiful natural features.

If the weather’s good, and it usually is, try one of the other outdoor leisure activities in the area. Play a round of golf or go whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River. The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a favourite for kids and adults alike.

Head into town and delve into the area’s frontier history at the Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum. The Western Museum of Mining and Industry is also located in the city. Check out the collection at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Centre or visit the United States Air Force Academy, home to the memorable Cadet Chapel.

Colorado Springs is built on a grid system, and it is easy enough to navigate. The city is well served by busses and taxis, although many visitors choose to drive since parking and roads are good and many destinations are only accessible by car. Weather in Colorado Springs in usually sunny and mild, since the city is protected from the elements by the mountain range.
