Two safari parks, an aquarium and a nocturnal house lie within the extensive borders of this southwest Hyderabad animal park.

Bring the kids to one of India’s largest animal parks. Half-zoo and half-museum, the Nehru Zoological Park is spread across 104 hectares (380 acres) of land. More than 160 species of animals live throughout the grounds. Go on a lion safari, enjoy an elephant ride or simply take a break from the bustle of Hyderabad’s busy streets at this open nature park on the shore of a peaceful lake.

The Lion Safari Park offers views of lions and tigers in their natural habitats. Board a secure park-run van and search the safari enclosure’s 12 hectares (30 acres) for Asiatic lions. The tigers’ realm is even bigger. It features panthers, jaguars and white tigers alongside friendlier creatures such as sloths and bison.

The nocturnal house artificially flips the day-night cycle for a variety of species, so visitors can see how nocturnal animals act during the night. Take a tour and see how lively some animals such as bats are when the rest of the world is sleeping.

Tour the primate exhibits to see baboons and monkeys. The aquarium features thousands of colourful fish, while the reptile enclosures display deadly snakes and crocodiles.

A train runs around the zoo. Take a ride to see where your favourite animals are located and come back later on foot. You can also drive through the extensive park in your own car, a battery-operated hire car or by bicycle. Make sure to bring your own food, as there is limited fare offered inside the park.

Like many Hyderabad attractions, the zoo is closed on Mondays. Otherwise, it’s open daily from morning until late afternoon throughout the year. Fees apply for entrance to the park and for various other attractions and amenities, such as rides and toilets.

The Nehru Zoological Park is located next to the Mir Alam Tank Lake in southwest Hyderabad. There’s a bus stop next to the entrance. The best time to visit is early in the morning and during the winter, when it’s not so hot and the animals are more likely to be active.
