This 12th-century fortress sits on a hill above an extensive ruined city. Explore the battlements, gates and drawbridges of this ancient diamond-mining settlement.

Travel to the western outskirts of Hyderabad to see this ancient fort and the ruined city that surrounds it. Once, Golconda city thrived due to its diamond mines and Golconda Fort protected the settlement from invasion or thieves. Constructed from mud in the 1100s by the Kakatiya Kings, the fort still features imposing mud walls and incredible acoustics. Join the crowds of visitors at one of Hyderabad’s most popular attractions.

Enter the fort through the eastern Bala Hissar Gate. From here explore the labyrinth of walls, mosques and armouries of the ruined city spread across the hill. Gaze across the 10-kilometre (6-mile) wall that cuts through the ruins. Ancient cannons, gateways and drawbridges line the wall. Stroll through the gardens, the only part of the ancient city that is not in ruins today. A map is available from the entrance if you’re worried about losing your way among the dense fortifications. The site is also well signposted.

Imagine an assault on the fortress as you look out over the landscape from the vantage point of the Rahban Cannon. Explore the interior of the fort to find ancient chambers where rulers slept more than 700 years ago.

Listen to the fort’s uncanny acoustics, which once enabled easy communication when invaders were sighted. Clap your hands at the entrance and someone else in your party will be able to hear the sound up to 1 kilometre (0.5 miles) away.

A light-and-sound show is cast on the fort by night. Return once the sun has gone down to hear the history of Golconda played out by actors over a loud speaker.

Located on the western edge of Hyderabad, Golconda Fort neighbours the Mahakali Temple. A bus station stands right by the fort’s entrance. You can also take the 11-kilometre (7-mile) drive from the city centre by taxi.

The fort and its surrounds are open every day, except Monday, from morning until late afternoon. There is an entrance fee, plus a separate fee to attend the nightly light show.
