Hyderabad residents often host weddings at this opulent palace, which features lovely gardens, exhibitions and many grand chambers.

Step into Chowmahalla Palace to experience the regal lifestyle of a Hyderabad ruling family. The palace served as the official residence of the Nizams of Hyderabad, who lived and entertained here beginning in the 19th century. The palace is said to be a replica of the Shah’s Palace in Iran. Tour the 5-hectare (12-acre) grounds to see courtyards, halls and fountains and to enjoy the pleasant gardens that surround the palace.

The palace’s name, which means “four palaces”, accurately describes its layout. Four separate structures branch off a network of interconnecting courtyards. The Southern Courtyard is the oldest part of the complex. The Aftab Mahal, built in a European style, is the largest of the palaces. Walk through the Northern Courtyard, which is a beautiful outdoor hall with access to several different palace rooms.

Go to the centre of the palace to find Durbar Hall. This massive chamber is filled with marble pillars, glittering chandeliers and Belgian crystal. Temporary exhibitions of artefacts and royal riches can be found at the Council Hall.

Look for the Clock Tower. The clock has been keeping time since the palace was built more than 150 years ago.

The palace’s grounds feature a peaceful natural landscape where you can wander along the tree-lined shore of a lake. Photograph the palace reflected in the serene waters.

The Chowmahalla Palace is open every day except Fridays and national holidays. It is open from morning until late afternoon. There is a fee for admission. Weddings and corporate events are often held here.

The palace is located in the city centre just south of the river. It’s easiest to arrive by bus. Just to the north lies the Laad Bazaar, where you can bargain for handcrafted jewellery and other wares.
