"We stayed one night at Yellow House Niseko, and that was enough for us. While the location was convenient for walking to local pubs and convenience stores, and the staff was very responsive—helping us arrange a private taxi from the airport—the overall experience left a lot to be desired.
The biggest issue was the paper-thin walls. Our room had a sliding door that opened into the main lobby area, so we could hear everything—footsteps, conversations, and any movement from other guests. The...

The staff were all so nice and when they saw us Checking in with our 5 year old they brought him his own robe and slippers for the onsen. We are going to make it a point to come back here."

"Large apartment with two double bedrooms incl. bathroom. Also a large kitchen/relax area.
Excellent location just minutes from the Main Street and restaurants and food trucks. "
"This was a great little place to ski and stay in Niseko. Very central to all the things in Hirafu. It’s about a 10-15 min walk to the ski lift but still great. The staff were super helpful in helping us get a ride to the airport in Chitose when we got stuck without a rental car that we were expecting. Great stay. Would stay here again."
"A spacious property nearby Hirafu main area. Staff are friendly and very helpful. We pick this place since they offer a relatively flexible shuttle service around Hirafu which fitted our need."
"This is a very nice property. A few things need to be maintained and checked. The humidifiers were quite gross upon removal of the tanks to refill. I own a humidifier, they require cleaning. I lightly cleaned them myself with warm water, but didn’t want to use our only abrasive sponge. The onsen right sliding door was left slightly open, I pushed it shut on our 2nd day only to realize on our 3rd day that it made the problem worse on the left door. I had to fully open the left door and use the...
"This is the perfect little single room efficiency with kitchenette and full bath. It’s small but would be perfect for a single or couple who rented a car or otherwise has transportation and wants to experience Niseko. There no much in walking distance but a whole lot in a few miles drive. "

Wonderful place to stay. They picked us up from the bus station which is only 300 meters away but with the snow would have been hard to walk. The front desk were always friendly and helped when they could. Breakfast fresh and plentiful. Both restaurants were great. With Sushi Shin unbelievable an experience to have.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Chalet Ivy. The room was a good size and the drying cupboards were very welcome as they helped to dry out ski jackets etc. Breakfast was tasty with a good variety of choices. Staff were helpful and polite. The ski concierge and hire service was also very useful. Prices for ski hire were competitive except for helmets which were a lot cheaper to hire elsewhere eg Rhythm

Amazing hotel with great staff and beautiful suite. Breakfast was incredible but dinner options were limited. Could not get into their Japanese restaurant even though booking day in advance. When booking their Italian restaurant, they said they only had one table left by entrance door. I pushed for a window seat and said we would be out in an hour. Anyway, the restaurant was never more than half full and we never had to move. Made me wonder if we should have headed over to the Japanese...

Ski lift was very close, just a few hundred metres away, we had a car so we could easily get around from resort to resort and were able to see and ski on all four of them. Grand Hirafu and Anapurri are definitelly the best.

Fantastic accommodation - clean, spacious, well equipped and comfortable.
This accomodation is under Ski Japan and they will get you to Snow Dog on arrival and departure. Our apartment was ready and we were taken to there to check in, really fast and we were able to settle in quickly. Well equipped with oven, microwave, big fridge, coffee maker, washing machine, dryer - just like at home, so much so we decided to buy local fresh produce and cook every night. Really helpful and friendly staff....

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best area to stay in Kutchan?
The best area to stay in Kutchan is Hirafu, particularly for those seeking a premium ski holiday experience, followed by the Kutchan Town area for a more local feel and value.
Hirafu is the most well-known and developed area for winter sports, located on the slopes of Mount Niseko-Annupuri. It's broadly divided into Upper Hirafu and Lower Hirafu. Upper Hirafu is closer to the main ski lifts and offers a wide selection of luxury hotels, chalets, and apartments, many with ski-in/ski-out access. The main street, Route 343, is lined with rental shops, high-end restaurants, and cosy bars.
Couples looking for a luxurious and convenient ski trip will find Upper Hirafu ideal. The proximity to the ski lifts means less travel time, and many accommodations offer amenities like private onsens and concierge services. After a day on the slopes, there are plenty of sophisticated dining options and places to relax.
Lower Hirafu offers a slightly more relaxed pace than Upper Hirafu but still provides easy access to the skiing. It features a good mix of accommodation, from boutique hotels to self-catered apartments, often at a slightly better value than its upper counterpart. This area is well-suited for those who want to be close to the action but prefer a slightly less bustling environment.
For those prioritising practicality and local culture, Kutchan Town is a great option. It's the administrative centre of the region, located about a 15-minute drive from the Hirafu ski resorts. Here you'll find more traditional Japanese restaurants, supermarkets, and local shops, offering a glimpse into daily life outside the resort bubble.

When is the best time to go to Kutchan?
The best time to go to Kutchan depends entirely on your preferred activities, with distinct peak seasons for winter sports and summer exploration.
For winter sports enthusiasts, the prime season runs from mid-December to early March. During this period, the area is blanketed in exceptional powder snow, making it ideal for skiing and snowboarding. You'll find the ski resorts in full operation, with plenty of options for lessons and gear hire. Keep in mind that this is also the busiest time, so booking accommodation and activities well in advance is essential.
If you're less interested in snow and prefer outdoor adventures like hiking, cycling, or golfing, then the summer months from July to September are perfect. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the landscape is lush and green. Many of the ski lifts operate for scenic gondola rides, offering stunning views of Mount Yotei. This season is less crowded than winter, providing a more relaxed pace for exploring the natural beauty of the region.
