The mission of the ACMI is to preserve, promote and exhibit the many different forms of television, film, and digital technology. They also house a wide range of cutting-edge facilities used by creative people working in these industries. The heart of the centre is the permanent exhibition, Screen Worlds: The Story of Film, Television and Digital Culture. This is sure to delight both young and old visitors, from curious children to lovers of the golden age of the silver screen. The exhibition is very participatory and interactive, giving you the chance to try your hand at everything from 1970s arcade games to the latest in high-spec gaming. There are also regular temporary exhibitions, covering topics as diverse as costume design in cinema, and the development and future direction of computer games technology.Check the website before you visit to find out about the old classics or indie films showing when you’re in town, or if you're lucky, you might catch one of the regular film festivals hosted in the ACMI. Meet the people in-the-know at one of the talks with artists from film and gaming often held here, or let yourself be inspired by ideas which have been made into reality over the last century at the Australian Mediatheque archive. There's also the opportunity to learn how to create your own story in the movie-making or digital storytelling workshops. And when your legs and mind need a break, the centre's restaurant and bar – open Monday to Friday – offer a choice of light snacks and full meals. The ACMI is open all year round, except Christmas Day, and there are free guided tours of the Screen Worlds exhibit twice daily. Many of the other exhibitions are also free of charge. The centre’s website is well worth a look to plan your visit.ACMI can be found in Melbourne city centre, at Federation Square, which can be easily reached by foot, bike, boat, tram, bus, car or train to nearby Flinders Street Station. There is pay car parking available at Federation Square.
