My partner and I checked in during the early evening. The room wasn’t in great condition (a bedside table had fallen off the wall, no AC, flickering lights), but we weren’t too bothered and went out for dinner.
When we returned around 22:30, the room was extremely hot and stuffy. As I pulled back the bedsheet, I immediately spotted a bug that looked very much like a bed bug. We showed it to the staff member who checked us in. He sent a photo to his manager, who quickly insisted it was “definitely some sort of wood mite.”
After researching, we found nothing resembling a wood mite. We inspected the bed more closely and found multiple marks on the bedding and mattress seams consistent with bed bug droppings. By nearly 23:30, we no longer felt comfortable staying and found another hotel.
At reception, we requested a refund. Staff agreed and told us to cancel through Expedia, but that wasn’t possible after checkin. So they assured us they would process the refund within 10 business days.
Almost a month later, no refund has been issued. After multiple emails and calls, Expedia informed us that the property had rejected the refund request. Also, they attempted to charge us €20 in tourist tax for two nights—the highest we encountered anywhere in Italy.
We don’t need luxury, but we do expect basic cleanliness and honesty. Terrible experience and even worse customer service. Book at your own risk.
