Overlooking the serene waters of Kunming Lake, this palace served as a tranquil retreat for the Qing Emperors and still provides a peaceful haven for visitors.
Escape from bustle of Beijing’s busy streets and head for the tranquillity of the Summer Palace. Built during the Qing Dynasty in the eighteenth century, it originally served as a summer sanctuary before becoming the official residence of the Qing Emperors. The palace complex remains one of China’s largest imperial parks, sitting majestically on the banks of Kunming Lake. The unparalleled beauty of the Summer Palace and grounds makes it a must-see destination for any visitors to Beijing. Like many buildings from old China, it was damaged during the Opium Wars but was quickly restored to its former glory. Nowadays, the palace grounds are a showcase for the very best of imperial Chinese architecture and garden design.A quick stroll from the East Palace Gate will take you to the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity, a beautiful building packed with artefacts and sculptures from the imperial era. Keep an eye out for the imposing wooden pavilion as you make your way around the edge of the manmade Longevity Lake. Known as the Boat of Purity and Ease, it is berthed permanently on the north-western shore of the lake. The towering 60-metre peak of Longevity Hill, built from earth dug out of the lake basin, is an ideal location to sit and watch boats making their way gently across the lake. Look upwards to see the lofty Hall of Dispensing Clouds stretching towards the heavens. From here it’s a short walk to the Tower of Buddhist Incense. For a small fee, you can visit a singular gilded Buddha figurine, with a thousand hands and eyes.Located 15 kilometres to the northwest of the city, the Summer Palace can be reached by taxi or train. Alternatively, jump on the subway to Beigongmen or Xiyuan Station – a few minutes’ walk from the Gates – and bring food for a picnic on the lush green lawns. It can take up to an hour to get there but the trek is well worth it, as you will be rewarded with spectacular views, tranquil gardens and elegant Chinese architecture.
