Sugar Wharf

Once a working dock, this local icon has been restored and is now a popular destinationfor tropical weddings.

This quaint structure is one of the most admired in PortDouglas. All the sea traffic, boats, catamarans and luxury yachts pass thewharf when they head out to the Great Barrier Reef. The historic building, oncea working dock, is now a popular venue for weddings and is one of the mostphotographed sites in town.

The Sugar Wharf was originally built for movingsugar around Australia. It was connected by train to Mossman, where the SugarMill was located. The shipping of sugar by boat ceased in 1958 when the firstroad to Cairns was built.

Walk along the wooden wharf and take a photograph ofthe long white shed with the surrounding water, the big open sky above and thewaving palm trees. The pylons along the side of the platform can still be used forboats to moor, though you are more likely to see weddingparties rather than sailors or fisherman step off the boats.

Before the jetty became a popular wedding venue, people came to relax, fish, watch the sunset, enjoy a takeaway meal or visitthe shipwreck museum. The museum closed for renovations, which added a dance floor, bar and dining tables. When itre-opened as a functions venue it quickly became one of the Tropical North’smost popular wedding destinations.

Walk along the pier at sunset and enjoy the relaxingviews. You can see the Sugar Wharf from the beach at the south end of AnzacPark. For the best photographs, visit the beach at sunset when the changinglight is reflected in the water around the wharf.

The rolling mountains, the calm water in the inlet, thenearby St. Mary’s by the Sea chapel and Marina Mirage all make the Sugar Wharf awell-located and beautiful place to host your special event.
