This glass, cube-shaped building holds a vast archive of modern and contemporary art. Study works by Warhol, Lichtenstein and famous German artists.

Behind the glass façade of the cube-shaped Kunstmuseum Stuttgart are more than 15,000 works of modern and contemporary art. They include pieces by celebrated German artists such as Otto Dix, Adolf Hölzel and Willi Baumeister. The collection began in 1924 when Count Silvio della Valle di Casanova donated his collection of impressionist paintings to the city.

There are five floors of artworks to explore with three floors devoted to temporary exhibits. Some of the exhibition space is housed in two former traffic tunnels.

Study the large collection of German paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Explore the Archive of Willi Baumeister, an early 20th-century painter and illustrator known for his classical, modern and avant-garde works. See drawings, paintings and prints as well as some of his diaries, letters and articles. Listen to some of the audio interviews he conducted with his contemporaries.

Take a break from your artistic tour and go to the rooftop terrace that has a 360-degree view of Stuttgart.

See Bauhaus student Fritz Winter’s complete oeuvre. There are more than 500 pieces that range from his early drawings to his work in the 1970s. Observe abstract art pieces from the second half of the 20th century. Appreciate works of concrete art by Max Bill, Aurélie Nemours, Manfred Mohr and others. Admire neon installations, material collages and food-related sculptures.

The Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is situated in the heart of the city. The cube-shaped modern art building is close to numerous bus, train and underground routes. Metered car parking garages are within walking distance of the museum. You’ll need an environmental green sticker on your car to drive here, as the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is inside the city’s Environmental Zone. These stickers certify that a vehicle is environmentally acceptable.

Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is open every day except Mondays and some public holidays. If you pass by the museum at night, stop to admire the view. The glass outer shell is illuminated by the lights coming from the interior stone walls.
