Visit this historic riverside church to enjoy the haunting sounds of the recently restored organ that was much admired by the composer Bach.

St. Catherine’s Church is one of Hamburg’s five major churches. Dating back to the 13th century, it stands near the banks of the River Elbe in the heart of the city. Despite suffering heavy damage in the bombing raids of the Second World War, the church has been carefully restored and continues to offer a welcome sanctuary from the bustling city streets.

Originally constructed for the fishing communities of the River Elbe, this church has undergone many a transformation since its presence was first recorded in 1256. It was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the mid-15th century, and the 17th century saw the addition of a Baroque spire to the bell tower. However, it was reduced to nothing more than a shell during an air raid in 1943.

The church you can see today combines the second-oldest structure in Hamburg – the base of the bell tower – with an extensive, but sympathetic, reconstruction carried out in the 1950s.

Step inside and you’ll discover historic artefacts, including a bronze cast font and a collection of statues, as well as a wood carving of St. Catherine and a crucifix, both dating from the 15th century.

St. Catherine’s is perhaps best known for its large and elaborate church organ. There has been one at this church since the 15th century, and it has been extensively improved and added to over the centuries. It will be forever associated with the world-renowned composer and organist Johann Sebastian Bach, who was a frequent visitor in the early-18th century. Although damaged in the bombing, it has been carefully restored and is showcased with frequent concerts and performances.

Don’t miss the views from the top of the 117-metre bell tower. If you can muster the energy to climb the flight of over 200 steps, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the river winding through it. Join one of the tours of the tower, run on Saturday mornings from June to October.

Admission to St. Catherine’s Church is free. The closest U-Bahn station is Messberg.
