Immerse yourself in the darkest periods in Hamburg’s history this is a truly unforgettable experience, not for the faint-hearted!

The Hamburg Dungeon brings to life the most gruesome events in the past 600 years. During the 90-minute experience, you will witness the devastation of fire and floods, the effects of deadly epidemics and the unrelenting horror of inquisition and torture.

Climb into the “Elevator of Doom” and descend into the underground dungeon to the sound of grinding cogs and rusty chains. The Dungeon’s Keeper will meet you at the bottom, with chilling tales from Hamburg’s history.

Discover that the circular Torture Chamber offers nowhere to hide from the Torturer and his deadly instruments, then find yourself face to face with the inquisitor as you are sentenced for witchcraft. Abandoned in the twists and turns of the Labyrinth, you’ll have to fight the fear to get past the clouds of smoke and disorienting mirrors and make your way out to the other side.

Relive the horror of the Great Fire of 1842 as the smoke closes in and the sound of the screams gets louder. Or travel further back in time, and cling to a small raft, your only hope of survival in the floods and storms of 1717.

Learn about the gory effects of the deadly plague on the human body, thanks to the enthusiastic and detailed descriptions given by the Plague Doctor at the hospital. You may well be chosen to assist him, so look out for unexpected jets of blood!

Witness the execution of the legendary pirate Klaus Störtebeker, whose body continues to walk after beheading, and encounter the malicious ship’s ghost Klabautermann. Navigate your way through the infamous 17th-century Work House, before entering the executioner’s chamber. This tour ends with a stomach-churning eight-metre free-fall – the length of the drop when hanging a convict.

The Hamburg Dungeon is open every day. The closest U-Bahn station is Baumwall. The attraction is open only to visitors aged ten and over, and the more challenging experiences are optional. Plan ahead to ensure that English-language tours are scheduled.
