Historic adobe architecture, world-class museums, scenic wineries and picturesque beaches are the highlights of this Californian city.

Visit Santa Barbara’s idyllic, palm tree-lined beaches. Tan and read on the soft sand, or grab a surfboard and get into the water. If you’ve never surfed, take a lesson from one of the local surf shops near Stearns Wharf. The waves vary in size and strength, making Santa Barbara’s beaches ideal surf spots for those of all skill levels.

Get a taste of Santa Barbara’s Franciscan-Spanish architecture at Mission Santa Barbara. Founded by Franciscan friars in 1820, this well-maintained mission contains numerous historical artefacts and documents, an operational chapel and picturesque grounds. Another excellent example of the city’s architecture is the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Climb its clock tower for a stunning view of the downtown area.

Visit the Santa Barbara Historical Museum and learn about the city’s intriguing past in the Story of Santa Barbara exhibit, which traces local history from Native American civilisations through to the 20th century. Continue the history theme with a trip to the El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, a wonderfully preserved late 18th-century Spanish fortress. The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History documents the evolution of local flora and fauna.

Art enthusiasts will enjoy the city’s excellent museums and galleries. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has an extensive permanent collection of pieces from Europe, America and Asia and plays host to a wide variety of world-class exhibitions. Just down the street, is the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, one of the foremost venues for contemporary works in Central California. Founded by artists in 1976, this museum is located in a beautiful Spanish style villa. In addition to displaying high-quality artwork, the Museum of Contemporary Art also hosts film screenings, talks, and other events. For a more intimate and local experience, visit any one of the numerous downtown galleries.

Taste local wines with a visit to the region’s vineyards.

In addition to having the sophistication and amenities of a large city, Santa Barbara also maintains a charming and friendly atmosphere. Discover its fascinating history, numerous cultural activities and beautiful beaches.
