Portola Hotel & Spa at Monterey Bay

"A beautiful, modern hotel in an excellent location, within easy walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row and the harbour. The hotel is exceptionally well maintained, the bed was incredibly comfortable, the shower was excellent, and the restaurant staff were fantastic. We really enjoyed our stay overall. There were a few negatives, however. The swimming pool is located across the road from the hotel, which isn't ideal when you're walking back with a soaking wet child. We also had a frustrating issue with payment at check-in. The hotel attempted to take payment before we'd moved money into the correct account. Rather than declining the payment, it emptied the available balance from our account, and it took around a week for the money to be returned, which caused unnecessary stress during our holiday. The reception staff also came across as quite cold compared with the excellent service elsewhere in the hotel. Finally, the air conditioning was extremely noisy and sounded like the room was about to take off down a runway whenever it was running."

"Solid place, actually surprised me in its quality. Bed was comfortable, fridge got super cold, shower had great water pressure. Clean overall! Stairways were also clean. Front desk people on check in and check out were both super nice. My only complaint is that my room had no curtains! It had one of those white doily things, and that's it. Never really felt like I had full privacy since leering eyes could potentially peek in if they really wanted to. I assume that it's because they didn't want curtains falling in front of the AC unit below the window but there has to be a better solution here. Very convenient location and walkable to one of the main streets with lots of food and shop options (though not the aquarium area)"

"We just had one night driving through, and this was a good choice for where to stay. Very convenient to the wharf and shops downtown. The room was bigger than I had anticipated and had a working fireplace. We left early the next day so we were able to take advantage of free street parking that runs from 6 pm to 9 am. There is also a free or discounted lot nearby the staff can direct you to, you don't have to valet."
