A peaceful botanical garden where you can learn more about Hawaii’s vibrant plant life.
Established in the 1980s within the grounds of Kona’s Outdoor Circle, originally founded by Sadie Seymour in 1948, these compact botanical gardens were designed by her son Scott as a tribute. The purpose of the original Outdoor Circle not-for-profit organisation was to “keep Hawaii clean, green and beautiful”. Today, when you visit, you’ll find 11 tiers of species arranged geographically. You’ll get to see the many tropical species of trees, flowers and plants growing here and find out the origins of some of Hawaii’s best known plants as well as plants native to the South Pacific. You’ll also get to explore one of Hawaii’s most important archaeological sites.
Pick up a self-guide brochure and start your exploration of the 6,000 square-metre site. Illustrated signs help make your visit easy and relaxing as well as providing useful information. Bring along a picnic as there are no food facilities on site. The grounds are the perfect place to sit and relax for a while and enjoy a leisurely lunch.
One of the big attractions within the garden is Kealakowa’a Heiau, a ritual site of great importance for locals. Traditional canoes were constructed here long ago to transport travellers between the islands, and it was here at this spot where they would be blessed at the ceremonial platform before they were first used. In the Outdoor Circle education centre, you can learn about the region’s history and discover more about rich variety of plant life.
Kona’s Outdoor Circle lies less than five kilometres outside Kailua-Kona. The gardens are situated inside the Circle, and are easy to reach by car – free parking is also available. Public transport does not service the gardens, but taxis are available. The garden opens every day and admission is free – though you’re welcome to make a donation.
