This brand new purpose-built attraction brings the far-away ocean right into the land-locked heart of America.
The Sea Life Aquarium came to Kansas in 2012 and has quickly become one of the city’s most popular attractions. The company behind the aquarium owns over 35 similar establishments around the world and has brought years of expertise to this latest venture. Over 5,000 creatures can now be seen in fascinating close-up thousands of kilometres from their natural homes in the seas and oceans of the world. The aquarium displays are themed around different marine habitats. South American piranhas offer a snappy welcome as you make your way past the freshwater tanks near the entrance towards the crabs and starfish in the touch pools, which are always a popular draw for young visitors. Helpful staff are on hand to explain more about the creatures and their underwater habits. The walkway underneath the ocean pool is another favourite spot for families. Here you can watch powerful sharks and graceful rays swimming right above your head and admire the vibrant colours of tropical fish as they dart around the huge tanks. The highlight of the visit for many is the seahorse tank, where these delicate and fascinating creatures create a compelling spectacle. The vast range of different species on display is the result of a pioneering breeding programme that’s the envy of many more established aquariums. Two or three hours will give you enough time to view the whole aquarium and maybe attend one of the interactive talks which complement the live exhibits these are advertised in advance on the museum’s website. There’s plenty to keep children amused and engaged, from the informative interpretation displays to the ocean-themed play area. The Sea Life Aquarium is in the Crown Center near the city centre. It is open daily, with late closing on Fridays and Saturdays. Parking is free in the Crown Center if you validate your ticket at the aquarium admission desk. Public transport from Union Station and Main Street stops nearby.
