Discover the legacy of one of China’s most revered political figure at this impressive memorial hall.

Explore Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall and visit the museum dedicated to the life and times of the former political leader. See the bullet-proof Cadillacs in which he used to ride and wander the pathways in the stunning gardens that surround the building. Visit the nearby square to enjoy musical performances and other cultural events.

Chiang Kai-shek was the leader of the Chinese Nationalist movement between the years of 1950 and 1975. Set in 25 hectares (62 acres) of gardens, the memorial hall pays tribute to his life with photos, drawings and a number of interesting articles that explain both the man and the historical context in which he lived.

Those with an eye for architecture will appreciate the painstaking work that has gone into the building. A blue-tiled roof sits on the white marble walls and against a red background. The colours represent the values of brotherhood, freedom and equality.

89 steps, each representing a year of Chiang Kai-shek’s life lead you up into the museum. Make your way into the main hall to see the museum’s most impressive piece, a large statue of Chiang Kai-shek made from bronze. The sculptor has captured him sitting in his chair with his guards surrounding him. Elsewhere in the museum you can see artefacts such as uniforms, military memorabilia and photos.

Don’t miss his preferred mode of transport, the bullet-proof Cadillacs he used for political engagements. Take note of the Chinese characters on the walls which represent his values of ethics, democracy and science.

Leave some time to stroll around the stunning gardens which surround the hall. These are landscaped in the traditional Chinese style. Listen to the sound of gentle waterfalls and visit the Yunhan and Guanghua ponds.

A visit to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall can easily fill a day, especially of you want to explore the nearby National Concert Hall and town square. To get here take the MRT to memorial station, or jump on a city bus.
